Sporcle Saturday: Total bases in the playoffs

Good morning!

In case you missed it (and I wouldn’t blame you, really), Jose Abreu crushed it against the Twins in the Astros’ divisional series win. Pito slashed .313/.353/.875 with three dingers and eight RBI. Not too shabby! Abreu’s game three was the one to remember, though: the 9-1 rout over the Twins saw him sock two dingers and record eight total bases.

Eight total bases. That’s pretty good! In fact, it would be the most by a White Sox player in the playoffs since game one of the ALDS against Boston in 2005. Today’s Sporcle is about total bases in the playoffs: name the White Sox players throughout history who have logged 4 total bases or more in a single postseason game. Thatโ€™s 63 entries: how many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • Iโ€™ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, Iโ€™ve provided the number of total bases, the date of the game, and the position that the player played during that game.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Albert Pujols (2011 World Series, Cardinals) and Bob Robertson (1971 NLCS, Pirates) share the record for most TBs in a single game, with 14.
  • The player who sits with third-most TBs from this list (8), did so by cracking 4 doubles in a game in 1906.

61/63. I missed the RF and 3B of the Hitless Wonders.

No matter how dire the current team is, having a reason to remember

never fails to make me smile. Thanks, Ted.

Inspired by Ted’s quiz, I read a pretty good SABR bio on the 1906 3B that sheds more light on how the Sox upset the dominant Cubs that fall. Not a bad piece to read as baseball media frets about the Braves, Dodgers, and Orioles losing after 100-win seasons.

60/63. Missed the ’93 DH and the two that asinwreck missed. I wonder when we’ll be able to add to that list. Hopefully sometime in the next 10 years.

59/63. I got all of them except for the ’06 guys.
