White Sox Minor Keys: Aug. 13, 2023

Truist Field in Charlotte
(Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

The White Sox didn’t seem like they were going to give Yasmani Grandal a ticket out of town anytime soon when I wrote about it a few days ago, because it hasn’t seemed like Korey Lee is fully operational.

There’s the fact that he’s 7-for-28 with no extra-base hits, no walks and 10 strikeouts over eight games with Charlotte, but he’s also played just short of regularly, especially since the Sox can rotate him to DH with Adam Hackenberg behind the plate. Between learning to catch White Sox pitchers, and maybe some residual effects from his strained oblique, I thought he might be looking at a little bit of an onboarding process.

But maybe not, at least if Pedro Grifol can be trusted (he can’t). Nevertheless, he did offer his forecast of changes that might be coming to the catching ranks in the near future:

Gwinnett 10, Charlotte 7

  • Adam Hackenberg went 1-for-4.
  • Jordan Leasure: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Montgomery 9, Birmingham 2 (5 innings)

  • José Rodríguez was 0-for-3.
  • Terrell Tatum was 0-for-2 with an HBP and a strikeout.
  • Bryan Ramos went 2-for-3 with his 11th homer.
  • Wilfred Veras doubled and struck out twice.
  • Edgar Quero, 1-for-3 with a K.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes struck out in both plate appearaces.
  • Jake Eder: 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 2 HBP, 48 of 69 pitches for strikes.
  • Jared Kelley: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

Winston-Salem 7, Rome 2

  • Jacob Burke went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
  • Brooks Baldwin, 1-for-5.
  • Wes Kath was 1-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Mason Adams’ High-A debut: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Down East 5, Kannapolis 2

  • Jacob Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a sac fly and a strikeout.
  • Calvin Harris was 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Eddie Park, 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
  • Jacob Sprinkle was 1-for-4 with a K.
  • Noah Schultz: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 36 of 56 pitches for strikes.

Colson Montgomery has been off 3 games in a row. I wonder what’s up.

He tore both ACLs and is retiring. Second (third?) Rebuild already over.

Considering this org’s history with injury communication that is not funny.

Yes, the Sox are very quiet regarding why minor leaguers are missing games. For prospects, we often never hear the full story until the following spring training if they are high level prospects. When there were more spring games broadcast and more time to fill, we got more stories of the later innings guys. With that gone, there’s nothing.

Matt

Been watching the system more because the actual team is a depressing follow, overall I think they have some guys who have upside, but most of the prospects need time to refine some fundamental things. Unfortunately, the White Sox dont seem to care much about that aspect so they will certainly rush guys out of desperation next season.

I’m starting to think they’re going to try and raid the farm in order trade for MLB pieces as part of their usual half-assed efforts at contention. Wouldn’t be surprised to see guys like Ramos, Veras, Popeye etc. in other orgs by opening day next year.

Augusto Barojas

I can’t imagine them taking that approach, even as dumb as they are. They may sign a couple crappy veteran players whose last good season was between 2 and 8 years ago, but I don’t see them trading guys like Ramos or Popeye. Even Hahn has to know they are years away from being even a .500 team again.

Honestly following the farm system in 2016-2018 era was the most enjoyable part of the rebuild. If nothing else, I can drown my sorrows in my completely delusional overoptimism regarding every prospect that goes on a 5 game hit streak.

King Joffrey

My brain turns off when I hear the Grif-raff.

Fleetwood Mac said it best:

Rhythm is gonna get you
Rhythm is gonna get you
Rhythm is gonna get you
Called up

I’m sure you’re right about Fleetwood Mac but I just can’t get past Gloria Estefan.
