White Sox Minor Keys: May 13, 2023

Oscar Colás

Oscar Colás (Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

It's not weird to me that Oscar Colás is still in Triple-A, even though he's now hitting .429/.468/.714 after a three-hit, two-double game against Durham on Saturday.

As I said in the post about second base after Elvis Andrus' injury on Saturday, the White Sox are in crisis mode at this time, and if Pedro Grifol wants to limit the amount of exposure for unimpressive-to-date rookies while he tries to bail water, that's his right. There will come a point -- maybe in the very near future -- where 2023 becomes more about figuring out who's going to help in 2024, but whether Colás plays four months or 4½ months won't meaningfully change his 2023 experience, assuming he stays largely healthy for the duration of it.

(However, it's worth noting that if the White Sox call up Colás early next week, they'll have held him in Triple-A long enough to gain back the year of service time.)

My question is, if the White Sox want Colás to play right field at the MLB level when he's on the White Sox, why is he not playing it in Charlotte? He made his fourth start in center for the Knights, versus two starts in right and three as a DH. That's the part that doesn't seem particularly helpful, especially since he seemed uncertain about some of the angles during his time with the White Sox.
