Foulkelore

Having our starter throw 35 pitches in the 1st inning of game 1 of a doubleheader seems counterproductive.

Foulkelore

Making their starter only throw 13 pitches in the 1st inning of game 1 of a doubleheader also seems counterproductive.

Trooper Galactus

I was expecting a season of mediocrity, but if Lance Lynn is toast this might wind up epically bad.

roke1960

Well, I just checked to see the score. No need to even look in. Maybe Giolito can salvage game 2.

Trooper Galactus

Third inning, down by three, three men on base after Lynn issued his third walk. The planets have aligned.

Trooper Galactus

And of course it’s Josh Harrison doing the damage here. Of course.

ChiSoxND12

I have long maintained that HBP should count against a pitcher’s WHIP, for obvious reasons. It’s a free base allowed by the pitcher.

But with the in-my-head-math for standard WHIP, sox bullpen: 39BB + 70H / 54.667 innings, right around 2.00. That’s absolutely horrifying, appalling Stuff

jorgefabregas

Colás has not hit the ball with much authority (2nd percentile avg exit velocity). I am wondering if their efforts in the off-season to get him to hit the ball the opposite way have been counter-productive.

calcetinesblancos

Let’s let him accrue at least 100 MLB at-bats before we start busting his balls too hard. 😉

Yeah, the bar I set for Colas was just to avoid getting demoted. As long as he can hang in there until he gets adjusted to MLB action, he’ll be fine. If the season rests on whether or not he’s a star, that’s not his fault.

jorgefabregas

If his wRC+ is in the 70s, he will probably be demoted at some point.

Trooper Galactus

Oh yeah? For who? A 70 wRC+ is probably the best this system can muster from a replacement outfielder right now.

jorgefabregas

Haseley, someone on the waiver wire, whoever. Replacement level players are available. But again, this is only if his wRC+ is in the 70s or below. Only 5 players got 500 PAs with a wRC+ under 80 last year and 4 out of 5 had excellent defensive seasons.

Trooper Galactus

Hasely had an OPS+ of 66 last season and couldn’t crack the roster ahead of first basemen playing the outfield. Colas is going to have a lot of rope.

jorgefabregas

That exit velocity has been one of the lowest in the league. Not what you would expect for a guy who hit 24 homeruns last year and has 60 raw power according to scouts. I’m not busting his balls, just wondering if the coaching is undermining him.

calcetinesblancos

I actually think he’s looked pretty good, and I can tell he’s learning how pitchers are trying to get him out. I hope they ride with him in RF.

upnorthsox

I think you’re being overly optimistic but I see no reason not to ride him for now. There is no plan B.

BillyKochFanClub

What are the Phillies doing? They scored in the first, so they aren’t allowed to score for the rest of the game, right? Isn’t that one of the new rules or is that just a Sox thing?

Trooper Galactus

White Sox dink and doink offense really getting it done this inning.

Foulkelore

If you can’t hit it over their heads, hit it in front of them?

Trooper Galactus

Brilliant!

jorgefabregas

Yeah, Wheeler must be annoyed. Vaughn’s (101.7) was the only one that counts in MLB’s stats as hard hit (over 95 mph).

Trooper Galactus

Yeah, Wheeler’s ERA and FIP definitely gonna get some separation after today.

dwjm3

If you were a true fan you would appreciate this offense.

Trooper Galactus

Your team is losing the game.

Everybody watching

Foulkelore

Why is Lynn being left in? He never should have been allowed to face the order a 4th time, and he’s over 100 pitches.

BillyKochFanClub

Because a washed Lynn at 100 pitches and going through the 4th time through the order is probably still better than any reliever we have.

Trooper Galactus

Not to mention they need every out they can get from the starters with a doubleheader.

Foulkelore

Hah, shows how bad the White Sox lefties have been. Three lefties in the bullpen, and Lambert is chosen for potential minimum L-R-L batters, and it worked. Kudos to go against the grain for Grifol there.

Trooper Galactus

Josh Harrison had an OPS under .500 entering today’s game.

GrinnellSteve

That was the first 1-2-3 inning Kimbrel has thrown this year…

SpringerDinger!

Two things:

Eloy looks absolutely terrible at the plate today
.
That Josh Harrison homer shouldn’t even be on the board as Jimmy Lambert got screwed on the call in the previous AB

BillyKochFanClub

We’ve seen plenty of bad calls go in the Sox favor and the opposing pitcher doesn’t immediately give up a bomb. All teams get bad calls, the good ones work around them.

True story. CB doesn’t exactly have a sterling reputation behind the plate either

Augusto Barojas

I know there has been a lot of criticism of their bullpen but I disagree. The Phillies bullpen looked just fine.

ForsterFTOG

Reports of the Phillies bullpen’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The Senior Director of Baseball Operations is really going to have their work cut out for them next year in terms of fixing this roster and finding a competent GM. I wish Rick Hahn the best of luck.

Malkatraz

Why fire Hahn when you can just promote him?

As Cirensica

Was at work. Missed the game. Phew…

upnorthsox

Just when I’m thinking hey we could do the typical split of this DH I look at the scores and see Detroit swept their DH….vs Cleveland no less.
And yes, that means we are now in 4th place.

a-t

That’s much better than the reverse, no?

funkerdan

I personally think it’s dumb to care what place we’re in while under .500. am I wrong? Let’s get to .500 first.

upnorthsox

The Sox vs Lefty lineup has 3 guys hitting under .200 and another at exactly .200, ugh.
Still, I’m always optimistic against lefties.

Matt

Bold Prediction: In a desperate attempt to fix the bullpen, the Sox will deplete the farm for insert any pen arm that isn’t very good, but Hahn believes will bounce back in their elite pitching lab…just feels like thats coming down. Goes to show, you can field an entirely different roster than the “mirrored in mediocrity” years Hahn once referred to, but results tend to look the same regardless

BillyKochFanClub

Sox score 3 runs in the 1st…hopefully, someone will tell them they can do that throughout the game as well.

BillyKochFanClub

Nobody’s told them.

BillyKochFanClub

Andrus picked off in an era where you only get two attempts.

jorgefabregas

.940 expected batting average on that Luis Robert fly out into the wind (108 mph, 32 degree launch angle).

a-t

Feeling like 2019-21 Lucas is back. Good omen.

ChiSoxND12

If you told me Aaron Bummer would give up the first hit on the first batter I’d be shocked. I’d have thought for sure he walked the leadoff man ahead of the hit

funkerdan

the look on his face was just… “bummer.”

a-t

I can’t be too mad about a game where my biggest complaint is “the bullpen gave up one hit and no other baserunners”. Would be nice if the back end of the bullpen found their mojo.

As Cirensica

Could it be that tomorrow we’ll win 2 games in a row for the first time? I mean, the Tigers currently have 5 wins in a row. FIVE!

Foulkelore

It would be the first series win too. Do you believe in miracles?

SpringerDinger!

Hate to be pessimistic, but there’s a righty on the bump for Philly.
