Sporcle Saturday: Luis Robert gets the Sox a grand salami

Good morning!

When Luis Robert hit a grand slam in Thursday evening’s blowout win over the Twins, it marked the first grand slam a player has hit for the White Sox this season. With that grand slam, the White Sox now join 24 other teams in MLB to have at least one during the 2022 season.

In case you were wondering about those other five grand slam-less teams: the Royals (unsurprising), Mariners (kinda surprising), Nationals (unsurprising), Rockies (a little surprising given their home park), and Dodgers (what the hell?). At any rate, grand slams are what today’s Sporcle is all about: which players since 1990 have hit at least one grand slam in a season? There are 127 entries: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the year and the position of the player. If a player hit more than one in a season, I’ve notated a parenthetical number next to the year.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Dating back to 1957, the Sox have had a player hit a grand slam at least once during a season, except for 1980.
  • No player has hit more than 4 in one season for the White Sox, though it has happened twice: once in 1997 and again in 2008.
  • Since 1916, the White Sox have hit 286 grand slams.

110/127 before I ran out of time. Great mix of stars and guys I haven’t thought of in a long time (like one of the 2007 second basemen).

What a delightful quiz presented here for a delightful reason.

124/127, missing one each from 2010, 2007, and 1998. (The son of one of the guys I missed will get drafted this weekend.) May next week’s quiz also be due to a happy, productive performance by the 2022 White Sox, even if I will be late taking the quiz as I will be traveling.

115/127. What an interesting array of players on that list. Another great quiz, Ted!

I was baffled by 2012 2B/3B— and when the answer was revealed I realized I’d actually not just been at the game where that grand slam was hit, but the ball landed quite close to where I was sitting down the left field foul line.
