There was talk in one of the comment sections yesterday about how great a deal the Sox got in getting McGuire for Collins and someone pointed out that the Blue Jays think they got a deal getting Collins for McGuire. In the battle of incredibly small sample sizes, Collins just hit a double to raise his early season average to 0.429 over 14 ab with a couple of doubles and a home run. The Sox needed someone who can actually do a good job behind the plate and the Jays needed a left-handed dh. We’ll see how it works out for them.
I can’t see Collins as a DH. Was shocked to see him DH for the Jays, that they don’t have somebody better even when resting people. If he miraculously hits for them, why couldn’t he do a thing with the Sox?
Because 1) catching and 2) highly irregular playing time are not very conducive to hitting effectively? The only time he got regular PAs was when Grandal was out last year and that was only like six weeks, tough for anyone to adjust to hitting in the bigs that quick.
Good point about lack of continuity. But still, in 300 AB’s you would have thought he would have done something. Would be crazy if he turns into a good lefty hitter for them… I highly, highly doubt it.
300 PAs is only half a season, that’s not very much? It’s pretty common for rookies to struggle through entire 600 PA seasons. Collins’ batting line last year looked basically as expected (high K, very high BB) just without the pop he’s expected to produce. I don’t get the skepticism that Collins will hit, he’s always raked in the minors, and it’s not like his profile as a hitter has changed or been exposed or anything
It would be really maddening as a Sox fan if Collins becomes first player since Ted Williams to hit .400.

Velasquez is pretty much the definition of replacement level, I assume Cueto will be the same once he replaces VV, and then hopefully everyone will be healthy.
The two BBs in the first were obviously on VV but the rest of the inning was just snakebit… franco and margot’s hits were very much not hard contact, and it would’ve been just 1 run had VV not muffed that tailor-made comebacker

Yeah Robert just keep swinging at that first pitch …you know teams advance scout you
True. But they averaged 3 runs a game for the 6 game homestand. They are quite lucky to have won 4 of 6. Hope their hitters get it going vs the Guards.

Cueto has to be better than Velasquez. Velasquez unlikely to be on roster in 2nd half, if not way before that.
If only pitch location and control did not matter, VV might be really good.
First inning Vince: pretty damn bad!
Everything else Vince: pretty damn good!

Their offense has really not looked good as a whole on the homestand.
Indeed…I still hope Robert will continue to improve his game
I think the pitching may have contributed to today’s loss a bit.

They are down Pollock and Moncada that is going to sting. Tony said Pollock is close at least
Sox and Rays trading awful TOOTBLANs in key situations
Sox 4th and 5th innings: 2 hits, 4 walks, 1 HBP, 2 SBs, 1 WP, 1 PB and just 2 runs out of it.
Tim was dumb to steal home with Eloy up and the tying runs on base.
Hopefully the Severino-Grandal pairing not one we see too many more times in late, close games
