White Sox Minor Keys: Aug. 11, 2021

When we saw that Caberea Weaver had received a promotion to Winston-Salem, it stood to reason that Kannapolis would receive an outfielder from the Arizona Complex League to fill the role.

That outfielder is Misael Gonzalez. The 12th-round draft pick out of Puerto Rico who had a nondescript performance in his pro debut in the AZL in 2019 (.194/.246/.237) put himself on the low-level radar with a torrid stretch in the ACL this year. He hit .311/.393/.595 over 21 games, and that includes a 2-for-17 start to his season.

Gonzalez wasted little time getting acclimated in A-ball. He homered in his first at-bat.

Jacksonville 9, Charlotte 8

  • Blake Rutherford went 2-for-5.
  • Yermín Mercedes was 1-for-5 with a double.
  • Gavin Sheets, 0-for-5 with a K.
  • Micker Adolfo went 2-for-4 with a triple, walk and strikeout.
  • Kade McClure’s Triple-A debut: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
  • More fodder for the “Nik Turley has checked out” theory: 1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Birmingham 7, Chattanooga 1

  • Romy Gonzalez bounced back from a golden sombrero: 2-for-3 with two homers and a walk.
  • Yolbert Sanchez was 0-for-4 with a K.
  • Yasmani Grandal DH’d and also went 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Carlos Pérez went 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Lenyn Sosa was 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.

*Gonzalez’s crushed what looked like a hanging cutter and a hanging slider:

Greensboro 9, Winston-Salem 5

  • Jose Rodriguez’s second game is more like it: 3-for-5 with a grand slam. He also struck out and was caught stealing.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes went 0-for-2 with three walks, a strikeout and a stolen base.
  • Luis Curbelo went 2-for-5 with a double and two strikeouts.
  • Luis Mieses went 1-for-4 with a K.
  • Yoelvin Silven moved up: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

*Rodriguez’s slam:

Augusta 12, Kannapolis 3

  • Wilber Sanchez went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
  • Bryan Ramos, 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Harvin Mendoza was 0-for-4.
  • DJ Gladney walked once and struck out thrice.
  • Chase Krogman went 0-for-4 with a K.
  • Misael Gonzalez’s A-ball debut: 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk.
  • James Beard went 2-for-4 with a double.

Glimmers of encouragement among the infielders….

Kade McClure? I remember him from AA Birmingham!

Also, I have to believe that the seasons we are seeing from Romy/Yolbert combined with the addition of Cesar were what drove Hahn to be okay with trading Madrigal. That’s not to say that either will be as good as Nick but there is time for a standard progression through the minors and there is potential to have at least an average player at the position.

Greg Nix

J-Rod looks better than both of them. Wouldn’t be surprised if he starts next year in AA.

And he could be better than both of them. I’m more commenting on the timeline that was created with the acquisition of Cesar lining up with both Yolbert and Romy being potentially ready for an MLB call up.
