White Sox Prospects

White Sox Minor Keys: July 14, 2019

Before the White Sox drafted Andrew Vaughn, Marcus Semien was one of the biggest proponents of the Cal first baseman being taken at No. 3. It's a little unusual to see an active MLB player taken in an interest in a college player for a team that isn't his, but Semien went to the same school, and the scout tracking Vaughn was the same scout that signed Semien earlier in the decade.

Now that Vaughn is an actual White Sox prospect, James Fegan followed up:

Semien still hits at Cal’s facilities in the offseason, which is where he first encountered Vaughn, long before he ever saw him hit in an actual game. And yes, Vaughn stood out.

“Just the fluidity of his load and his swing and consistency,” said Semien, hours before he took part in a 13-2 demolition of his former team Saturday. “And then you talk about his approach too, approach and swing are two different things. He has both. He walks a lot and doesn’t chase. I know it’s college, but guys are good. Guys are throwing harder and harder, so I’m sure the competition is pretty similar to what he’s facing in Low-A.”
