The Great Falls Voyagers could’ve let the minor-league season last a few more days, but they didn’t want to chance it.
They swept their way to the Pioneer League title, building an early 5-0 lead against Grand Junction and holding on for a 6-4 victory. Romy Gonzalez, who went 0-for-10 with five strikeouts during Great Falls’ sweep of Billings in the semifinals, went 6-for-9 in the championship series, including a 3-for-3 performance on Thursday.
It’s the Voyagers’ first title since 2011, although they did lose in the finals to Ogden last season. KRTV in Great Falls has the early highlights, which includes looks at Gonzalez, Jonathan Stiever and Lenyn Sosa:
Great Falls 6, Grand Junction 4
- Lenyn Sosa went 2-for-5.
- Romy Gonzalez, 3-for-3 with a double, walk and stolen base.
- Bryce Bush walked thrice and struck out twice.
- Amado Nunez was 1-for-5 with three strikeouts.
- Gunnar Troutwine went 1-for-4 with a strikeout
- Jonathan Stiever: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 WP
- Codi Heuer: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB
And that’s all she wrote for the 2018 minor-league season.
Amado Nunez has now won two championships with White Sox affiliates. He was on the 2015 Arizona League rookie team that won it all.
Time to call the ol’ boy up to Chicago next season. World Series champions 2019!
On a serious note: thanks for all the Minor League recaps this season, Jim. It’s a ton of work, I’m sure, on your end to keep the rest of us up-to-date with the lower-level happenings.
At least somebody won something.
You make me laugh. Â It is in darkness where we must find humor. Â
And that is usually where I find mine.
Which came first, chicken or egg: my dark/dry sense of humor, or my White Sox fandom? Tough call.
The dark sense of humor of whoever introduced you to White Sox fandom
Yes, that would describe my father.
Thanks for keeping us updated on all of the minor league happenings this year Jim! Always one of my stops in the morning when I get in front of my PC. Truly appreciate you aggregating all of the good content.
Jim wins the championship for his several dozen updates of the accomplishments and setbacks of the Sox minor league system.
Thanks for these articles throughout the year Jim!  One question: are all the Sox affiliates being retained?  I saw PDCs were up this year for at least Kannapolis and Great Falls.  I’ve always hoped the Sox would move their low A affiliation to the Midwest league.
I’d be surprised if the Sox left Kannapolis, which is getting a new stadium in 2020.
Charlotte, Winston, Kannapolis — hard to top for convenience….
They all have 7-11s?
Birmingham doesn’t
Thank you Jim as always for the minor league news and analysis. Good to see a champion out of one of them after following them all season long. Congratulations Voyagers.
