White Sox Wade’s Application for the White Sox Broadcasting Job
Brooks Boyer
Senior Vice President, Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer
Chicago White Sox
333 W 35th St.
Chicago, IL 60616
Dear Mr. Boyer:
I am emailing you this morning regarding your open television broadcaster position. While I understand that the position has not yet been posted online, I did not want to miss the opportunity to share my interest in the role.
I am a life-long Chicago area resident and third generation Sox fan. My grandfather grew up not far from old Comiskey Park and shared stories about Babe Ruth and Al Simmons when I was young. I’ve lived in Downers Grove for the past 20 years and both my sons played little league wearing Sox jerseys through your support.
I am passionate about the White Sox and baseball in general, which is what we need to portray in order to win back our fan base. While I lack professional experience, I’ve had an FCC license since 1989 when I was a high school broadcaster. Also, my friends love my broadcaster voice.
I know the White Sox typically make important hires without any external interviewing process, which is why I thought it was important to make my case for consideration quickly and in a non-traditional way. I believe I would check all the boxes for the position. I’m a huge Sox fan, I have little experience, I don’t have an agent, and I would come cheap compared to what my predecessors were paid. I would be glad to send you broadcasting samples at your convenience, and would welcome the opportunity to meet you in an in-person interview in the near future.
Sincerely,
White Sox Wade
Were you on the mighty WDGC?
No, i didn’t go to high school in Downers Grove, but both my kids did/do. I was on WHSD back in the day, which could be heard in DG most nights. 88.7 FM if I remember correctly.
88.3.
This is a GREAT cover letter! Do the White Sox even do job interviews for openings, or do they have a reprieve from the state of IL and federal EEOC laws to do whatever they damn well please, like they did with the hirings of Tony LaRussa and Chris Getz?
My assumption is that they don’t do actual interviews, but they get Jerry’s and Tony’s opinions, look at how much each candidate will cost, and go with the cheapest option. Oops, I shouldn’t say that, I guess I won’t be considered for the job now…
What is your position on advanced metrics like TWTW?
I’ll tell you what Stone Pony, I’ve never seen more TWTW than Rico Petricelli had. And nobody understood advanced metrics more than Ted Williams!
(Reinsdorf sticks a shaky hand outside his limo window and beckons you closer…flips you off for a surprisingly long time, slowly retracts his claw and informs his driver to run you over.)
