Sporcle Saturday: Pitchers to start a game since 2000

Good morning!

With Dylan Cease potentially on the move, the White Sox would lose the franchise’s active starting pitcher with the most starts (123). Of course, if the front office were to follow the Sox Machine Offseason Plan Project, Lucas Giolito would re-enter the fold and resume his march toward the top of the starting pitcher leaderboard. Giolito has the sixth-most starts over this time period and would comfortably be in fourth place by season’s end.

Today’s Sporcle, of course, isn’t just about the White Sox start leaders, but any pitcher who started at least one game for the team since 2000. In all that’s 108 names. How many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted the full 25 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the number of starts and the tenure of the pitcher in question. If they returned to the team over separate stints, that is not reflected in the tenure.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • One pitcher leads this list in complete games with 27, while the next-closest is 14, followed by 9.
  • That same pitcher, if you take his entire career, has 33 CGs. That’s fourth-most during this period behind C.C. Sabathia (38), Livan Hernandez (39), and Roy Halladay (65!).
  • These 108 pitchers have combined for 46 saves in their career (not including a particularly famous postseason save)

Right Size Wrong Shape

I think there might be a problem with the quiz (otherwise I’m reading the parameters wrong). I’ve tried

Freddy Garcia, Javier Vazquez, Orlando Hernandez and Carlos Rodon
, and none of them pop up.

I was confused for awhile, too. Many of the Latin players will only work with the right áccént marks.

Yeah, when the Yankees’ recent big signing didn’t show up, I remembered to use the accent marks. 79/108 before I ran out of time. Guessing lots of relievers helped my score a lot.

Thankfully for my mental health, I forgot a few of the 2023 starters.

I don’t even know how to bring accented letters up on my keyboard.

Well grading on spelling names…….I’m out again

You should do this quiz again in a year. There might be 20 new names after the treasure trove of washed up players that wind up on the mound for the Sox next year.

70/108. Missed several pretty easy ones, but also got some pretty obscure ones. Great quiz as usual, Ted!!
