White Sox Minor Keys: April 22, 2023
The White Sox, in their ongoing search to find any potentially rosterable position-player depth, signed Stephen Piscotty to a minor-league contract.
At his peak, Piscotty could hit 25 homers over 150 games and OPS over .800 while playing a decent right field. That peak ended in 2018 after a series of injuries. Over the last three years in Oakland, he hit .214/.270/.352, good for -1.5 bWAR, with FanGraphs only a little more kind (-0.8 fWAR). He had a strong spring with the San Francisco Giants, but they released him after a trade for Matt Beaty blocked his path to the outfield.
Piscotty appeared in Game 2 of Charlotte’s doubleheader in Louisville and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
Louisville 4, Charlotte 2 (Game 1, 7 innings)
- Carlos Pรฉrez went 0-for-2 with a walk.
Charlotte 8, Louisville 5 (Game 2, 7 innings)
- The Knights walked eight times in seven innings, including three from Jake Marisnick.
Birmingham 3, Pensacola 2
- Yoelqui Cรฉspedes went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. He was picked off.
- Luis Mieses, 1-for-4.
- Cristian Mena: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 55 of 76 pitches for strikes.
Asheville 8, Winston-Salem 3
- Loidel Chapelli went 1-for-4 with a double, walk and two strikeouts.
- DJ Gladney was 1-for-5 with a K.
- Wilfred Veras went 1-for-4 with a K.
- So did Wes Kath, but 1) he doubled, and 2) he avoided striking out multiple times for the first time all year.
- Tommy Sommer is up to 15 K’s in seven innings this year: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K
Kannapolis 15, Charleston 3
- Mario Camiletti, ultimate leadoff man: 1-for-1 with five walks and four runs scored.
- Brooks Baldwin went 2-for-5 with a double, walk and two strikeouts.
- Tyler Schweitzer: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Am I imagining things or do the Sox look to be in a state of semi-panic with respect to their minor league depth? What percentage of the Charlottte roster has already been turned over? Of course, itโs not as if these holes and these weaknesses could not have been forseen or anythingโฆ
Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. With any luck they might find one keeper but this is the Sox so don’t hold your breath waiting. Maybe when the trade market heats up but even then its usually for guys with flaws or who have run out of patience.
Luis Robert Jr. leading off today after this gem:

Grifol is losing me very quickly.
And Colas sits again, in favor of Sheets this time in RF. He’s not hurt as far as I know. Makes no sense. Colas has sat for 4 of the 5 games vs left handed starters, so Grifol has already given up on his ability to hit lefties apparently. Maybe he’s given up on him as a starter as well. In that case, Sheets isn’t the answer!
I mean they made their bed, Colas has to start. He’s the only RF on the bleeping roster.
I prefer to wait and see. On the surface it says What???? But we donโt have the same information. Maybe thereโs a plan for him so who knows.
When Eloy looked weak upon his return, he kept him 4th. And he homered in two straight games.
Iโm not saying Grifol is the answer. I just think the jury should stay out on him for awhile.
I think its a pretty big stretch to say that Eloy homered in 2 straight games because Grifol kept him in the 4 hole.
I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. I think the point is that Eloy is a good hitter (like Robert), who Grifol knew would turn it around at some point. Instead of panicking and moving him down to 7th in the order he rode it out. I haven’t been very impressed with Grifol thus far, but I think the day-to-day lineup hand wringing is pretty silly. If after a bigger sample you see that the wrong guys are playing too much or in the wrong spots, then it’s an issue.
Yeah thatโs the point. And Robert les off with a hit so there!
Jesse Scholtens had a pretty good outing. Would think heโs up there in the 7th starter depth chart.
