Striker’s Offseason Plan

PREAMBLE

I’m aiming for better defense, versatility, good rotation, awesome bullpen, no major financial commitments as I would like to have financial flexibility to try and retain my young core long term

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE PLAYERS

  • Alex Colomรฉ, $10.3M – Tender
  • Yolmer Sรกnchez, $6.2M – Sign to 2yr/$8m. I like that he can play 2B and 3B.
  • James McCann, $4.9M – Tender
  • Carlos Rodon, $4.5M – Tender, trade
  • Leury Garcรญa, $4M – Non-Tender
  • Evan Marshall, $1.3M – Tender
  • Josh Osich, $1M – non-tender
  • Ryan Goins, $900K – non-tender

CLUB OPTIONS

  • Welington Castillo: $8 million/$500,000 buyout – decline

OTHER IMPENDING FREE AGENTS

  • Jose Abreu (made $16M in 2019) – Retain, 2/$30m
  • Ivรกn Nova (made $9,166,167 in 2019) – Retain 1/$5m
  • Jon Jay (made $4M in 2019)ย  – Let Go
  • Hector Santiago (made $2M in 2019 on split contract) – Let Go

FREE AGENTS

No. 1: Will Smith (3/$33m). Stud bullpen arm. He might get more, but this is still more than Sportrac estimates.

No. 2: Cole Hamels (1/$14m). I need 180 good innings. This might be an overpay for him, but I don’t see him taking that big of a cut from the $20m he’s been earning.

No. 3: Yasmani Grandal (5/$90m). I love his bat and his glove. I don’t mind this long term commitment as hit bat could easily stick at DH or he might be able to move to 1B.

No. 5: Ivan Nova (1/$5m). Known commodity to eat innings.

TRADES

No. 1: Trade Lopez and Herrera to the Mets for Cespedes, Diaz, Nimmo and $6m cash. Mets need to cut payroll (save about $18m) andย  have some OF depth. Sox get a versatile OF (he can play all three OF positions) with a great OBP and 3 years control, plus a big bullpen arm under control for 3 years. White Sox might have to add a couple smaller pieces for this to make sense for the Mets. The more likely scenario is for the Mets to just dump Cano, cash and prospects on someone, but that’s doesn’t help me.

No. 2: Trade Rodon, Sosa and Vaughn to the Marlins for Brian Anderson. This might be a tough sell to the Marlins since Anderson is under control for 4 years. If Rodon is healthy, then that is the big swing piece that could tilt the deal in favor of the Marlins. Anderson is a solid fielder in both RF and 3B, adding versatility.

This lands me around $125m for payroll. I have no idea if Cespedes will even play in 2020 or what I’ll do with him if he is healthy. Nimmo can play CF until Robert comes up.

I like this one a lot. Similar to what I propose on Smith and making a trade with the Mets on Cespedes. Lineup is solid. Worry a little about Hamels/Nova.

Josh Nelson

I like the addition of Will Smith, and that Mets trade is a doozy in a good way.

Yeah, could retitle this the “Defending Giolito’s Comeback Player of the Year Plan.” You’d really want to keep Rodon to maximize your chances.
