White Sox 11, Orioles 1: Quite the eventful evening

Where to even begin?

Let’s start with the positives and for once there are a lot of them from tonight’s play.

  • Yoan Moncada got the White Sox on the board by blasting Alex Cobb’s curveball to center field for his seventh home run of 2018.

  • Adam Engel was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, a home run, and a stolen base. Yes, it reads that way no matter how many times you want to look it over. His best performance ever has helped raise his batting average over the Mendoza line to .212. Engel’s dinger was not cheap either.

  • If you still have hope for Carson Fulmer to find his way down in Charlotte, then tonight’s performance by Dylan Covey should give you inspiration. Looking much different than the Covey of old, he picked up his first career victory by pitching seven innings allowing six hits, one earned run, while striking out eight and just walking one batter.
  • Jose Rondon hit his first career home run in the seventh inning going opposite field to accomplish the achievement. He also swiped a bag, scored twice, and also walked. Rondon is performing well since being called up by the White Sox.
  • Another day, another double for Jose Abreu who went 2-for-5 for the evening with a RBI. Abreu now has 16 doubles on the season and is currently on pace to hit 56 doubles this season.
  • The White Sox clinched a winning home stand.

All of these bullet points should be enough to satisfy the appetite, but even in victory the White Sox troubles still persist this season. A news bombshell went off during the middle of tonight’s game first reported by Hector Gomez.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic confirmed the news. Castillo played every inning tonight, and it made for awkward television late with Steve Stone and Jason Benetti talking around what everyone was reading on Twitter about the news. Losing Castillo for 80 games is painful for the White Sox roster when you consider a lack of talent behind him on the depth chart. Making matters worse, Kevan Smith has been placed on the disabled list down in Charlotte. Just like that, there is a great mystery on who the White Sox will call up to help share the duties with Omar Narvaez.

Right around the time news of Castillo’s pending suspension was making the rounds, Leury Garcia in the fifth inning stole second and third base giving him nine stolen bases on the season. While sliding into third, Garcia’s front leg got caught in the infield, and he twisted it when trying to plant on the base. The Chicago White Sox are reporting that Garcia has a twisted left knee and more tests will be conducted with an update tomorrow. If Garcia does indeed go on the disabled list that is another roster spot Rick Hahn must find a replacement. Most likely it would be Charlie Tilson who is on the 40-man roster.

Quite the eventful night for the White Sox. It’ll be a long one for Hahn to patch up the roster.

This was a delightful game, despite the injury and suspension. Let’s get tomorrow’s game so I can be pissed the Sox are only 6-2 on the homestead instead of 7-1, thanks to Renteria’s goofy managing on Monday.

As for catcher, go ahead and skip a few levels and bring the Yermin Mercedes pimpshow to the majors.

Was about an hour and a half starting the game and saw Dylan Covey Trending on my twitter behind the Tomi girl getting water thrown in her face. Thought he would be throwing a no-no. Still impressed though

Perfect opportunity to bring up Collins with the publicly stated understanding that when Smith returns, Collins goes down to Charlotte.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Eloy in for Leury. At the very least, this should be the impetus to move him up to Charlotte to replace Tilson or whomever.

It’s time to start toppling the dominoes.

What kind of bizarro world are we living in where the stars of the game are Dylan Covey and Adam Engel? I’m happy for both of them and for Jose Rondon.
