Sporcle Saturday: Rookie left-handed home run leaders

This past Monday, Daniel Palka hit his 22nd home run of the season, which not only gave him a share of the lead for dingers on the team, but also tied the franchise record for homers by a rookie lefty. And how does that stack up with the rest of baseball? Well, that’s what today’s Sporcle is all about: of the 65 left-handed rookie hitters to hit at least 20 home runs in a season, how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the number of home runs hit, the season in which it occurred, and the team(s) the player was with.
  • Note that I’ve sorted by date rather than number of home runs.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Since the advent of Rookie of the Year voting in 1947, 41/57 (71.9%) players have received at least one vote. 13 of those won the award.
  • Four players on this list are in the Hall of Fame, with a couple more likely to have a strong case when eligible.
  • There are 109 right-handers to make the rookie list (a Sporcle for another time, perhaps): Matt Davidson is most recent from the Sox, with 26 last year.
  • Prior to Friday’s game, Daniel Palka was tied for 32nd-most all-time; another 6 dingers will bring him into the top-10.
