Sporcle Saturday: Hit categories I

delaywaves/flickr

Happy Halloween, everybody. 2020 has been a year filled with mostly tricks, so I’m going to start this holiday off with a treat. Well, depending upon where you stand with getting quizzed on players of past and present perhaps you’ll find it less a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and more a pile of stale candy corn. I digress.

Beginning today and running through some as-yet established Saturday, you’ll be quizzed on the leaders in various hitting and pitching categories for the White Sox going back to 1990. Everybody likes a good dinger, so we’ll start things off by taking a look at the team leaders in home runs. To qualify, a player must have hit 20 or more home runs in a year. That makes 97 entries: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the year and the number of home runs hit.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The high-water mark for number of unique players in a single season to hit 20 or more home runs is 6, in 2008 and 2004.
  • 1990 saw no Sox player achieve 20 that season. (Carlton Fisk came closest, with 18)
  • 2015 is the only season in which just one player hit 20 or more home runs.

97/97. Not too hard with 6:31 remaining. I always am slow on that 1996 guy. Happy Halloween everyone, and stay safe and socially distanced in Oshkosh, Ted. My mother-in-law (age 91) lives there and we won’t be traveling that way for Thanksgiving this year.

Rumor has it that he’ll be our right fielder next year

Not if the organization thinks Chet Lemon can’t handle center anymore and needs to shift to a corner.

Ed Cicotte would look pretty good in the rotation right about now.

97/97 with 2:22 remaining. Had to answer a phone call and a couple texts, then got stuck for about a minute on one of the 1996 ones, but happy to have been able to finish!

Oh, I think there’s a couple one-off guys who people may have already forgotten.

92/97. Missed a few guys in the 90s and, somehow, the 17-18 DH. I don’t know if it says more about me or the team that I remember 2006 better than I do 2018 (and I’m only 29).
