Sporcle Saturday: 8 IP, 1 or fewer Ks

Wednesday afternoon saw the White Sox cruise to an easy 8-1 victory over the hapless Detroit Tigers. If you missed that game, Ivan Nova had a kind of weird line in that he struck out just one batter (the first of the game), but still managed to go 8 innings. On Twitter, SoxNerd tweeted after the game that this was the first White Sox starter to go at least 8 innings with a max of one strikeout since May 4, 2011.

Never one to pass up an opportunity to tie recent events to a Saturday Sporcle, I looked up who else has accomplished that particular feat. As it happens, a surprising number of pitchers! Enough so that I’m limiting the instances that this has happened to just the DH era. That gives us 69 entries: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • To reiterate: a pitcher will qualify if he pitched at least 8 innings, and struck out one or fewer batters in the game. His decision is not taken into account.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the date of the game, and the result.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Over this era, the White Sox are 40-29 when this occurs.
  • The game scores aren’t that bad, either: the lowest is 38, a 9-5 win over Oakland on June 5, 1986. That pitcher went 8 1/3 IP, allowing five runs with 4 walks to 1 strikeout.
  • The highest game score is 83, strangely, by that same pitcher one month later on July 20, 1986: an 8-0 shutout of the Yankees, just two hits allowed, and no walks or strikeouts.

Right Size Wrong Shape

48/69. I did okay except for the ’70’s. Only a few that I missed that I should have had.

55/69. I really have no memory of

Hibbard, Horton, Allen
. Got all of the 1985 and earlier except for
Kucek and Proly

Right Size Wrong Shape

How do you not have memories of

The Little Bulldog

Hibbard was the first pitcher I entered. Soft tossing lefty, also pitched for the Cubs.

67/69. I missed

Sean Lowe and Jack Kucek.

My absolute favorite thing about this quiz is that
Tom Seaver
is a correct answer for it.

I got

. Was happy with that one.

Trooper Galactus

I was a bit surprised to see that a guy with over 3,600 career strikeouts was not only on the list, but on it TWICE.

64/69. Missed 2 I should’ve gotten and 3 from the 70s. Good quiz.

I missed

navarro- didn’t think he ever threw 8 innings. Lol. LaPoint, osteen proly and kucek

62/69. That was a very good quiz.
