Sporcle Saturday: 8 IP, 1 or fewer Ks

Wednesday afternoon saw the White Sox cruise to an easy 8-1 victory over the hapless Detroit Tigers. If you missed that game, Ivan Nova had a kind of weird line in that he struck out just one batter (the first of the game), but still managed to go 8 innings. On Twitter, SoxNerd tweeted after the game that this was the first White Sox starter to go at least 8 innings with a max of one strikeout since May 4, 2011.

Never one to pass up an opportunity to tie recent events to a Saturday Sporcle, I looked up who else has accomplished that particular feat. As it happens, a surprising number of pitchers! Enough so that I’m limiting the instances that this has happened to just the DH era. That gives us 69 entries: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • To reiterate: a pitcher will qualify if he pitched at least 8 innings, and struck out one or fewer batters in the game. His decision is not taken into account.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the date of the game, and the result.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Over this era, the White Sox are 40-29 when this occurs.
  • The game scores aren’t that bad, either: the lowest is 38, a 9-5 win over Oakland on June 5, 1986. That pitcher went 8 1/3 IP, allowing five runs with 4 walks to 1 strikeout.
  • The highest game score is 83, strangely, by that same pitcher one month later on July 20, 1986: an 8-0 shutout of the Yankees, just two hits allowed, and no walks or strikeouts.
