Alex’s offseason plan

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE PLAYERS

Write “tender,” “non-tender” or “rework/extend” after each player and their projected 2022 salaries. Feel free to offer explanation afterward if necessary.

  • Lucas Giolito: $7.9M (tender)
  • Reynaldo López; $2.8M (tender)
  • Evan Marshall: $2.3M (non tender)
  • Adam Engel: $2.2M (tender)
  • Brian Goodwin: $1.7M (non tender)
  • Jimmy Cordero: $1.2M (tender)
  • Jace Fry: $1M (non tender)

CLUB OPTIONS

Write “pick up” or “decline” or “rework” after the option.

  • Craig Kimbrel: $16M ($1M buyout)- pick up and trade
  • César Hernández: $6M- decline

OTHER IMPENDING FREE AGENTS

Try to retain, extend qualifying offer, or let go?

  • Leury García (Made $3.5M in 2021)- let go. There’s good internal options in Romy Gonzalez and free agent options as well.
  • Carlos Rodón ($3M)- extend QO. And if he accepts then extend him next year if he stays healthy.
  • Billy Hamilton ($1M)- decline, love him but Engel is better
  • Ryan Tepera ($950K)- 2 year 20 million deal. He’s reliable but overpay a little to get him to stay. He’ll be in high demand

FREE AGENTS

List three free-agent targets you’d pursue during the offseason, with a reasonable contract. A good example of a bad idea:

No. 1: Starling Marte ( three year- $34 million) Good pop and defense which is needed out in RF and it needs to be addressed

No. 2: Andrew Chafin: 2 year: 12 million. Reliable and shouldn’t be that expensive considering the other guys on the market.

No. 3 Kurt Suzuki: 1 year: 4 million

No. 4: Josh Harrison: 2 ‘years: 15 million

TRADES

Propose trades that you think sound reasonable for both sides, and the rationale behind them. A good example of a bad idea:

No. 1: Trade Jake Burger, Garret Crochet, and Jimmy Lambert to the Diamondbacks for Ketel Marte.

Give up a lot but you get a 2B for an affordable price this year and can extend to a long term deal later.

No. 2 Trade: Craig Kimbrel, Dallas Kuechel to the Phillies in exchange for Ethan Wilson and Logan O’Happe.: Salary dump for promising prospects and extending Rodon and Ketel Marte

SUMMARY

Lineup:

SS Anderson
3BMoncada
CF Robert
1B Abreu
2B K. Marte
LFJimenez
C Grandal
RF S. Marte
DH Sheets/Vaughn

Bench: Vaughn/Sheets, Engel, Gonzalez, Suzuki, Harrison

SP:

Rodon
Giolito
Lynn
Cease
Kopech

Wrapping up this plan: By shedding the salary of Kimbrel and Keuchel it opens up the door to spend money. Adding the two Marte’s would address the stolen bases while also improving the defense both in the infield and outfield. Ketel is versatile and can also play short and CF. By shedding the salary and trading for a superstar 2B vastly improves the chances of bringing back Rodon and improving the rotation. The final projection on for salary is to keep it around the $170 million (feel free to double-check, didn’t have a calculator nearby)
