White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 9, 2021
On a recent episode of MLB.com’s Pipeline Podcast, international baseball writer Jesse Sanchez talked about Oscar Luis Colas, who is connected to the White Sox for next year’s signing period starting on Jan. 15.
Starting around the 8:30 mark, Sanchez says of Colas:
One thing I was informed of this year — he’s probably not going to pitch anymore. Maybe he’ll do some mop-up duty, maybe something for fun, but that’s not part of his package anymore. Obviously it’s a skill set he has, but he’s going to be a hitter. He’s going to be an outfielder. He’s actually supposed to play in Dominican Winter League with Estrellas Orientales, which is managed by Fernando Tatis Sr. in the Dominican Republic. So that’s something else to watch: Colas in the Dominican Republic, how he does in winter league.
Colas ranks fifth on MLB.com’s Top 50 international prospects board, I’m almost more intrigued by Erick Hernandez, a fellow left-handed outfielder who ranks 28th and is expected to sign with the White Sox, just because the White Sox aren’t in on many 16-year-olds from the Dominican Republic with such a high profile. Then again, he does turn 17 on signing day.

Engel did not play last night after playing the last two. I hope that means he is on his way back rather than he needs more rest. Seriously have to wonder if he will be healthy enough to contribute in the postseason. Has missed more time than anybody.
Meanwhile TLR told ESPN that Eloy’s bruise was “significant”. I wonder if he’ll miss the next week or more now, geez.
Demolish that stadium already.
No kidding, or do something to fix it. Hope Eloy does not miss more than a week.
Eloy is in the lineup tonight. LaRussa’s definition of significant is a curious one.
That’s really good news, thanks. Yeah that was a weird quote (only place I saw was on mlbtraderumors). Anyway glad he isn’t going to be out a week or more, seriously.
Anyone know anything about Wilfred Veras? I’m statline scouting, but .277/.390/.462 and 126 wRC+ in 154 plate appearances the AzCL which is solid for an 18 year old.
Nice to see Montgomery off to a very solid start in his professional career.
He is a cousin of the Tatises
And his dad is a former big leaguer apparently.
This is interesting, and the brief scouting report comping him to Juan Soto is fun.
Just Juan Soto? I think he’s clearly more of a Barry Bonds type.
If he’s getting a Soto comp, he should be the #1prospect, #2 at worst, in the class. So I’m going with not Soto.
.
You don’t say.
Sorry, it was a dark period for me
There’s a fine line between really good or bad puns, am on the fence with where that one belongs!
DJ Gladney? Is he totally overwhelmed or what?
When will Colas sign and which year does he project to get to the show?
January 15 or thereabouts. Any guess between 1-3 years is valid, but we’ll see what he looks like in the Dominican Winter League for starters.
