White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 25, 2022

Colson Montgomery hits a grand slam on Sept. 10 against Chattanooga. (Jim Margalus / Sox Machine)

I wanted to wait until Colson Montgomery’s ride had completely stopped before noting that he was named Baseball America’s White Sox 2022 Minor League Player of the Year.

Montgomery finished the season hitting .274/.381/.429 over 96 games between Kannapolis, Winston-Salem and Birmingham, and only at Birmingham did he start looking his age.

  • Kannapolis: .324/.424/.477 over 205 PA
  • Winston-Salem: .258/.387/.417 over 164 PA
  • Birmingham: .146/.192/.292 over 52 PA
  • Total: .274/.381/.429 over 421 PA

Then again, it probably wasn’t so much that Montgomery was 20, but that he looked like he’d run out of steam at the end of his first full season. He went hitless in his final 14 at-bats at Winston-Salem, which made the promotion to Double-A a surprise before we learned that it was part of a larger experiment.

The introduction to Birmingham gives him some idea of what’ll be in store for him in 2023 should he start the season there, and also gives him a taste of the kind of pitching he would’ve faced had the Sox sent him to the Arizona Fall League.
