White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 24, 2022

Oscar Colás (Jim Margalus / Sox Machine)

It took Oscar Colás four whole games to hit his first homer at Triple-A, so he made up for lost time by hitting two.

He hit a two-run shot in the sixth, then a solo shot in the eighth to help the Knights rally to beat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 13-11 in 10 innings.

Here’s the first:

And here’s the second:

He also put the ball in play that scored the go-ahead run in extra innings, but it’s hard to give him much credit for that one.

Charlotte 13, Jacksonville 11 (10 innings)

  • Oscar Colás went 3-for-6 with two homers and a strikeout.
  • Jake Burger tripled, singled twice and got plunked once before being replaced defensively.
  • Lenyn Sosa went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and a strikeout.

Thought exercise: Oscar Colas, RF, opening day 2022….

soxfan

In isolation it’s probably not a great idea, but in comparison to Sheets or Vaughn starting the season as everyday outfielders it’s pretty a great idea.

My “best case considering they aren’t going to sign a nine digit contract or fleece someone in a trade or eat a bunch of money” OPP for position players would be:

SS – Anderson
CF – Robert
1B – Abreu
DH – Jimenez
3B – Moncada
RF – Colas
2B – Andrus
C – Grandal
LF – Pollock

Bench would be Savala, Sheets or Vaughn (backup 1B, DH, and 40ish games in the OF), and Garcia, and a defensive 4th OF like Engel or Payton.

So the moves would be resign Abreu and Andrus, dangle Sheets or Vaughn, and cut Engel if necessary. Garcia would also be on a short lease with Sosa on the verge but I said I’m presuming they aren’t eating money.

Success relies on regression, health, and better management of playing time and discipline.

Obviously there are better options but I doubt we’ll see them.

I’m stunned you keep Pollock over Vaughn. Vaughn in LF and Pollock is your 4th OF.

In all honesty, there’s some talent. And pitching. And with better management and better conditioning, this team could contend in 2023. I’m not kidding.

As much of a shitshow 2022 was, they are not that far away.

Pollock will exercise his option and Sheets and Vaughn can’t be everyday outfielders. Just can’t. Pollock, for all of his faults, has more bWAR than Vaughn despite an OPS+ that’s almost 30 points lower.

There are 1,200 1B and DH ABs. 200 can go to Vaughn after accounting for rest days (Grandal gets zero for the record). Then he can play 40 games in the OF and get another 160. Then whatever he gets PHing or as an injury replacement or whatever. It’s not maximizing his ability so maybe the answer is to trade him and let Sheets fill that role, but if we go into the regular season with either of those guys pencilled in as everyday outfielders my 2023 interest will be best summarized by the grandpa Simpson gif.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Eloy should be in LF over Vaughn.

Actually what I had in mind here was opening day 2022….

Oscar Colas in LF as a nice surprise because he beat out an established Vet (AJ) for the job, sure. But as the plan for 2023 going into the offseason, no that sucks hard.
Unfortunately that’s probably what they’ll do.

armchairGM

he’ll get a fair shot to compete for the job. i ultimately don’t think he’ll be the opening day RF. might need to crush AAA pitching for half a season before he takes over that spot for the next half decade
