White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 11, 2022

(Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

Mark Payton only received one plate appearance during his brief call-up with the White Sox, drawing a walk and coming around to score during Dylan Cease’s no-hit bid.

There hasn’t been a hangover since returning to Triple-A. He entered Sunday’s series finale against Nashville hitting .400/.478/.800 over 23 plate appearances, and he added a pair of homers on the first and last pitches of the game.

The second homer wasn’t an ordinary walk-off. The Knights opened the inning trailing 6-1, but thanks to Payton’s heroics, they ended up winning 7-6.

Payton was really staring into the opposing dugout on the walkoff. Wonder what that was all about?

Augusto Barojas

Wonder if he has a future? His numbers this year are pretty damn solid. 2021 as well, 2019 was outstanding. He’s a lefty which this team desperately needs. Is he a decent outfielder/fielder?

I know he’s old for a prospect but his numbers make him interesting.

Too bad the Sox haven’t had the need for a lefty who can play the outfield.

Torpedo Jones

I know relief pitching isn’t the most exciting topic, but I’m really encouraged by the recent results from Kade McClure and Lincoln Henzman. Henzman moved up to AAA a month ago and has a 2.76 ERA in his 9 appearances since joining Charlotte.

McClure seems to have turned a corner lately as he owns a 2.11 ERA in his last 15 games, which included a 30:9 K:BB ratio. I’m optimistic those guys can become inexpensive relievers for the big league club in the near future.
