White Sox Minor Keys: May 12, 2022

As we discussed earlier this week, the White Sox don’t have much in the way of immediate, bankable pitching depth, but two under-the-radar arms continued their emergence on Thursday.

In Charlotte, Davis Martin looked unfazed by the task of pitching at Truist Field throwing six shutout innings to improve to 2-0 in his two starts at Triple-A. He told Jeff Cohen that while Birmingham may be more forgiving, he’s not that far removed from working in unfriendly confines on a regular basis.

And down in Kannapolis, 19-year-old righty Cristian Mena continued his overpowering start by racking up eight strikeouts over four shutout innings. He’s now fanned 39 against seven walks over 26 innings, and he won’t turn 20 until December.

Charlotte 8, Indianapolis 4

  • Romy González returned to the lineup went went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.
  • Andrew Vaughn homered twice and walked twice in five plate appearances.
  • Jake Burger was 1-for-5.
  • Carlos Pérez went 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Yolbert Sánchez was removed from the game after a second-inning groundout.
  • Davis Martin’s debut in Charlotte: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Kade McClure picked up the save: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Birmingham 5, Biloxi 3

  • Lenyn Sosa went 2-for-5.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes did the same, with a strikeout.
  • And José Rodríguez made three.

Rome 3, Winston-Salem 2

  • Bryan Ramos went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • So did Luis Mieses, who doubled.

*Make sure to read Julie Brady’s Week in Winston, if you haven’t already.

Kannapolis 6, Fredericksburg 5 (11 innings)

  • James Beard was 0-for-5 with a walk and three strikeouts.
  • Wes Kath went 1-for-6 with a double and three strikeouts.
  • DJ Gladney went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
  • Chase Krogman, 1-for-5 with one K.
  • Wilfred Veras was 1-for-3 with two walks.
  • Cristian Mena: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K, 40 of 64 pitches for strikes.

If Garcia (and to a lesser extent Harrison) weren’t having cromulent Mays, I’d be more intrigued by that Sanchez exit.

Patrick Nolan

Nice save by Kade McClure. He really saved the game.

Torpedo Jones

No joke. I’m rooting for McClure to make it to the big leagues but that scenario (come in with a big lead, give us a few runs, finally escape danger) doesn’t seem like something that should be rewarded with a save.

Maybe a new stat like “Survives” rather than “Saves” for those situations?

Joliet Orange Sox

Let’s eliminate Saves completely! Any stat that apparently makes some people think Craig Kimbrel is more deserving of enshrinement in the Hall of Fame than Zack Greinke is a worthless stat.

*shakes fist at Jerome Holtzman’s grave*

Joliet Orange Sox

I personally was never a big fan of the work of “the dean of American baseball writers”. (Just talking about his work, I think he was probably a wonderful man when he wasn’t being dour on various media outlets around Chicago.)

I really do hate the Save as a stat.

Also, I was really rooting for Nellie Fox to get into the HOF by vote of the writers when he got 74.7% of the vote in his last year of eligibility in the mid 80’s but I thought Holtzman over the next decade or so (until Fox was enshrined through a Veteran’s committee) endlessly writing about and talking about that 74.7% rounds to 75% so Fox should be in was silly at first and really annoying as the years went by.

Augusto Barojas

How many games does Vaughn need after 2 homers to know he’s ready? If he’s healthy enough to play, he is more ready that 1/2 the Sox lineup as it is.

Depends just on how AV is feeling really. Which, if I had to guess, is pretty good lol

I don’t ever remember anyone going on a rehab stint after missing 2 weeks- this is just ridiculous. He hit 2 homers yesterday- if he’s not in the Sox lineup today that is complete mismanagement by Hahn.
