White Sox Minor Keys: June 27, 2021

Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak, Alaska

I’m on vacation this week, albeit not entirely from baseball. For one, the shift in time zones is well suited to pitch in with covering the Minor Keys at the end of a night. There’s also the matter that I’m still watching baseball.

My in-laws are boosters of the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks in the Alaska Baseball League, a collegiate summer wood-bat circuit, and they’ve gifted me a t-shirt here and a cap there over the years. I finally got a chance to see what I had been repping from a distance on Sunday, and while the Chinooks lost to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots by a score of 6-1, everything about the afternoon was a pleasure.

For one, there’s the backdrop of Lee Jordan Field.

It also reminded me of what Minor League Baseball lost when MLB eliminated the short-season leagues, which is providing a cheap form of baseball — free in this case, as the Chinooks are the only ABL team that doesn’t charge admission — for a community to gather around during the best two weather months of the year.

We may head back for a game on Thursday, because I’m curious what it looks like to play a game in a ballpark with no lighting at 9:30 p.m. In the meantime, I’ll continue to punch out the Minor Keys while appreciating Josh and the others doing the heavy lifting in my absence.

Kanny had a guy go 0 for 5 with two steals and another guy go 0 for 4 with two steals?!

Definitely my favorite affiliate to follow this year.

Shouldnt adolfo be up to AAA by now… he is an olderish prospect and Rutherford should be selling insurance for a living at this point.

Adolfo finally starting to show something. I’m sure they would like to see him get his average up, but I hope they promote him pretty soon as you suggest. He may be their best hope for an outfielder.

Cespedes is not exactly lighting it up since he got his visa issues worked out. Hope he can get it going and look more like his brother.

“The White Sox traded third baseman Todd Frazier, closer Player Page for David Robertson and right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle to the Yankees on Tuesday night in exchange for a four-player package headlined by outfielder Blake Rutherford, the Majors’ No. 30 prospect per MLBPipeline.com.”

Alec Hansen is now on something called the developmental list?

He was looking great a few years ago but now seems likely to be among those never to be heard from again.

Absolutely here for more discussion and photographs of the ABL. I have fond memories of sitting in the Mat-Su ballpark for “night” games, being occasionally distracted from the play on the field by the mountains in the distance and occasional swoops by eagles attacking their prey.

Amazing views. This is now officially on my bucket list. It’s actually the first item as I’ve never had a bucket list, but this inspires me so much to watch baseball in that environment.

And Reynaldo! Whatever you found that night, please repeat it!
