Dane Dunning pitching for Winston-Salem in September. (Jim Margalus)

Dane Dunning wasn’t pitching that well before the fourth inning of Saturday night’s game against Montgomery. He’d issued four walks along with a wild pitch over the first three innings, but managed to limit the damage to a couple runs.

He didn’t allow a run in the fourth, for that matter, but he might not have escaped larger trouble. His start ended in the middle of an at-bat with two outs.

He threw a backdoor slider that missed, then took a long lap around the mound before re-toeing the rubber. I’m guessing he didn’t intend to throw another pitch, but was waiting for somebody to take the ball from him, rather than giving it up voluntarily. Whether it was Zack Collins or the trainer, one of them took the hint.

Kiel and Lambert WOW.  nice to see Stephens stepping up as it makes the Dunning loss easier to stomach.   I know nothing but I’m assuming Dane will be on the shelf for awhile.

Nick Madrigal 1-4, with his first error, first caught stealing and only 6th K of the season.

Dunning’s possible injury is sad news, indeed. Given a choice of bad news, I am always happier to hear elbow than shoulder. TJS sucks but is rarely career altering in the way that shoulder surgeries are.

Greg Nix

He was rubbing his butt/leg, so hopefully it’s some kind of strain and not an arm issue at all.

Edit: Annnd never mind.

Shilling’s injury gives the Sox the opportunity to catch up with Jake Peavy and see if he has any advice for the recovering prospect.

Lency Delgado might be a thing.
