White Sox Minor Keys: July 29, 2018

Since they’re limited to bonuses of $300,000 for one more international signing period due to the Luis Robert bonus blowout, the White Sox went back to trading the money they can’t use for arms of interest.

On Sunday, they dealt $1.5 million of pool money to the New York Yankees for 25-year-old left-handed reliever Caleb Frare.

Frare’s had a nice season at Double-A Trenton, posting a 0.62 ERA with just 43 baserunners allowed (25 hits, 15 walks, three HBPs) to 57 strikeouts over 43⅔ innings. He gave up a run in his only appearance at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s dominant against lefties, but he’s also holding righties to a .568 OPS.

James Fegan provided a thumbnail sketch:

It wouldn’t surprise me if he saw time in Chicago in September, as he’ll have to added to the 40-man roster over the winter regardless if the Sox want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Is Tilson hurt again?

ndsoxfan

Eloy just checking those boxes….

GMetrix

he hasn’t experienced a slump yet! He needs to show he isn’t invincible first

Josh Nelson

Highlights from the game.

That opposite field power. Mercy.

roke1960

They are building an impressive stable of left handed relievers.

I truly believe that a day will come where I’m no longer amused by Hunter Kiel. But that day is not today, where Kiel is striking out more than 2 batters per inning, walking more than 1 batter per inning, and allowing a Batting Average of just .050.

Regarding Frare, “but he’s also holding righties to a 5.68 ERA”

I think you mean a .568 OPS

Frare for 1.5 million signing pool money. Of course this needs to play out but that seems a lot. I wonder if the Yankees will reciprocate next year when the Sox are out of the penalty box. His numbers are fine but he’s 25 and they have no room on the 40 for a relief pitcher who can’t make their top 30.
Anybody see it that way?

Seemed like a lot to me when Brad Brach only brought 250k

Brach has kind stunk this year, and is a rental.

The extra money is for the higher ceiling and control.

I wonder how well established the value of bonus pool money is or how it might vary between orgs. In December, FanGraphs had a piece looking at the subject of what teams get for bonus dollars.

Of course, markets are also fluid based on supply and demand.

soxfanpa

Interesting.

I’m also curious how long it will take for that value to stabilize. It’s been such a short time that it’s been available, that the longer term ramifications haven’t really been seen. It will be interesting to see what that market looks like in five or ten years

Au contraire, mon Frare

Sox need to stop sending Hansen out there for a bit. Side sessions only, or a little DL vacay, please.

Sox pick up Asher Wojcieohowski instead of promoting Dylan Cease. Trace thompson should be sent to a level were he can hit to gain confidence, were Adam Engel hit 265 in college, 260 in the minors and for his MLB career under 200, didn’t we trade for Tilson to play center he was hitting.Eloy should be up, he check more boxes than most of the current outfielder. Their are others who should be promoted to AAA for development purposes. Stop holding prospect back and let them play to gain experience.

I didn’t expect myself to hit the point where I wished Hansen would’ve just been shelved for the year, yet here we are. I’m certainly not holding it against him, and as I’ve said before, I consider this year a wash for him, but it’s definitely not fun seeing these box scores on a weekly basis.
