White Sox Minor Keys: July 10, 2022

Truist Stadium in Winston-Salem

Baseball America used the halfway point of the season to identify the Midseason Minor League Player of the Year for all 30 teams, and while the White Sox’s candidate comes as no surprise…

Chicago AL: Colson Montgomery, SS
High-A Winston-Salem

Drafted 22nd overall last year, Montgomery reached base in his final 45 Low-A games to earn a late-June promotion to High-A. In 51 total games, the 20-year-old hit .325/.422/.495 with six home runs.

… Lenyn Sosa and his .331/.381/.540 line between Birmingham and Charlotte at age 22 does manage to keep Montgomery honest. Third place, whether you go with Oscar Colás or Bryan Ramos among pitchers, or Christian Mena among pitchers, is a distant one.

Charlotte 1, Gwinnett 0

  • Lenyn Sosa went 0-for-3 with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Adam Haseley was 1-for-4 with a double and two strikeotus.
  • Carlos Pérez and Yolbert Sánchez were both 1-for-4.

Birmingham 8, Tennessee 7 (Game 1, 7 innings)

  • José Rodríguez went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes was 0-for-2 with an HBP, a strikeout and a stolen base.
  • Sean Burke: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

Notes:

*The Barons entered the final frame trailing 7-3.

Birmingham 2, Tennessee 1 (Game 2, 7 innings)

  • José Rodríguez went 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Yasmani Grandal was 0-for-1 with two walks.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes doubled and drew two walks.

Winston-Salem 9, Wilmington 3

  • Colson Montgomery went 1-for-4 with a walk.
  • Bryan Ramos, 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Luis Mieses went 2-for-4 with two doubles.
  • Cristian Mena: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 WP

Kannapolis 5, Carolina 3

  • Wes Kath went 1-for-4.
  • DJ Gladney doubled and struck out thrice.
  • Jared Kelley’s longest outing yet: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 30 of 51 pitches for strikes.

Minor Keys = hair of the dog

Torpedo Jones

Really happy to see Kelley go for 5 scoreless innings. I’m still concerned by the lack of K’s, but simply not giving up a bunch of runs is a win at this point.

Two more hits for Neslony in the first game of yesterday’s Barons double-header. What’s it going to take to get his .982 OPS up to Charlotte? Do we really need to see more from the Rutherford-Adolfo Express at this point?

Augusto Barojas

Neslony is also a lefty, OPS against righties is 1.12. It wouldn’t matter anyway, Haseley is also a lefty and never got a chance when he was up because TLR stuck Leury in the outfield just to be a dick. You could give the Sox Juan Soto and it’s no guarantee he would play most of the time with La Clown.

Nice to see Grandal working on his free pass game some more.

A perfect day for the minor league teams and a double header sweep to boot!

Montgomery’s BB/K at Hi-A is now 1.67. SSS applies still but this is an indication that he’s adjusted to pro ball so well already that Hi-A pitching is not really challenging him much.
