Romy Gonzalez (Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

Romy Gonzalez wasted no time acclimating to Charlotte.

Making his Triple-A debut on Saturday, Gonzalez went 2-for-4. Both of those hits were homers. The second of those hits was a three-run homer that gave the Knights a walk-off victory over Norfolk.

He directed the other homer right of center as well, so the dimensions of Truist Field seem to suit him well enough.

Team’s middle infield depth in the farm system doesn’t appear to be as barren as it did at the start of the season.

Gonzalez, Sanchez, & Rodriguez have all had nice seasons at their various levels, plus the addition of Montgomery.

On mlb.com, Bryan Ramos listed as Sox 11th prospect, and Lenyn Sosa at 18th. To go along with Rodriguez 10th, Yolbert 16th, and Romy at 21st. Not to mention Montgomery. So they appear to have a lot of middle infield depth.

With Romy the only one at AAA, wonder if it is possible for him to progress quickly enough to make Mendick obsolete some time next year.

Laz Rivera has had a nice year as well.

Steve

Romy has never really played SS before this year, even in college. In 2018, he was primarily a DH. In 2019, he played mostly LF and 1B. The Sox are doing their best to improve his value but major league SS is probably not in his future. While Fielding Pct. isn’t great for determining average vs. great defense, his .946 fielding percent is something to be suspicious about.

burning-phoneix

He mostly played third base in College. Some 2B as well.

Can Romy make a run this year as Cesar Hernandez is not inspiring much confidence?

No.

What’s up with Yermin? Just marking time til Japan, or making changes that might get him another shot in MLB?

Elena

I’m keeping my eye on Hinestroza and am looking forward to seeing him stateside…next year? I worried about his 1/3 inning stint yesterday, but saw that he simply closed out the game so…whew! Still good.

Goosenberg and Hackenberg are off to encouraging starts at Kannapolis, but really I just like writing Goosenberg and Hackenberg ….
