White Sox Minor Keys: Aug. 13, 2021

Southridge’s Colson Montgomery (2) hits a homer as the Southridge Raiders play the Mt. Vernon Wildcats in Mt. Vernon, Ind., Thursday evening, May 13, 2021. MACABE BROWN / Courier & Press via Imagn Content Services, LLC

I’d seen that Baseball America re-ranked its top 100 prospect list, and that’s something that no longer concerns White Sox fans anymore.

I didn’t see that Baseball America also re-ranked top 30 lists for each team, and that’s a lot more interesting. Here’s what’s changed since the first list, with the preseason rank in parentheses for those who made the cut after the revision.

PreseasonRankMidseason
Andrew Vaughn1Colson Montgomery
Michael Kopech2Yoelqui Céspedes
Nick Madrigal3Wes Kath
Garrett Crochet4Norge Vera
Jared Kelley5Andrew Dalquist
Matthew Thompson6Jared Kelley
Jonathan Stiever7Matthew Thompson
Andrew Dalquist8Gavin Sheets (12)
Yoelqui Céspedes9Jake Burger (19)
Norge Vera10Jose Rodriguez (28)

That’s a big jump for Céspedes, Burger and Rodriguez. Besides the graduations, a few players took big dips, including Stiever (15th) and Blake Rutherford (14th to 20th). Kade McClure also dropped off the list from his preseason rank at No. 20, and that seems like a clerical error.

Jacksonville 3, Charlotte 2 (Game 1, 7 innings)

  • Blake Rutherford doubled and struck out twice.
  • Gavin Sheets hit a sac fly and drew two walks.
  • Micker Adolfo was 1-for-3.
  • Yermín Mercedes struck out in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Jacksonville 4, Charlotte 2 (Game 2, 7 innings)

  • Yasmani Grandal DH’d, going 1-for-4.
  • Lenyn Sosa went 2-for-4 with a double.

  • Jose Rodriguez went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Yoelqui Céspedes went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Luis Curbelo went 1-for-4 with two strikeotus.
  • Luis Mieses was 0-for-4 with two K’s.
  • Caberea Weaver went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Augusta 5, Kannapolis 2

  • Bryan Ramos struck out in both his plate appearances.
  • DJ Gladney replaced him and struck out in all three of his plate appearances.
  • Harvin Mendoza went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Misael Gonzalez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Chase Krogman singled twice, walked and struck out.
  • Wilber Sanchez was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a stolen base.
  • James Beard walked twice and struck out twice.
  • Matthew Thompson: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR. But hey, 48 of 63 pitches for strikes.

ACL Angels 7, ACL White Sox 3

  • Colson Montgomery went 1-for-2 with a walk and an HBP.
  • Wes Kath was 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

The stat lines for Kath and Montgomery so far are kind of reversed from where I would expect. Looks like Kath has been stinging the ball when he does hit it, but striking out >40% of the time. His hit tool is supposed to be his carrying tool. Montgomery was supposed to be a raw athlete, but has limited strikeouts to the same amount as his walks and has a .458 OBP. Obviously a small sample with both.

Surprised Burger is still ranked so low. He was a first round pick and the only reason he did not do well right away is his misfortune with injuries. This year he has done what you would hope and expect. Seems odd that a late 2nd round pick out of high school is rated 3rd with him 9th.

Is Norge Vera playing this year?

Burger has 3 things working against him in prospect rankings and they all relate to the injuries: future injury risk, age, lack of professional track record. His prospect ranking doesn’t seem all that relevant since he is on the cusp.

Looks like Norge Vera made his debut today! 3 batters faced, 3 strikeouts in the DSL.

Great timing with my question… thanks for the update, good to hear he is pitching somewhere!

Heads up: ACL link goes to the Cannon Ballers box score.

I had forgotten about him until I saw the list today, and wondered what happened to him.
