White Sox Minor Keys: Aug. 1, 2019

Nick Madrigal’s new-level debut on Thursday was a little quieter than Andrew Vaughn’s the day before. Rain delayed it by 2½ hours to start, and when the Knights finally got underway, Madrigal crossed off “first Triple-A hit” with one of his trademarked singles through the right side:

If you’re looking for something with a little more flash, check out Luis Robert’s catch in the left-center gap:

Durham 7, Charlotte 6

  • Luis Robert went 0-for-5.
  • Nick Madrigal went 1-for-4.
  • Zack Collins homered, singled twice and struck out once.
  • Yermin Mercedes was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Danny Mendick was 3-for-4 with a strikeout.

Forbes lookin good!

lil jimmy

Steele Walker turned 23 this week. Happy Birthday kid!
He seems to be as advertised. He might be that LH Right fielder of the future.

Digger910

Been able to see the Dash a bunch this year since moving to the Carolina League region. He does look pretty good. Good outfielder. Always hitterish at the plate. Has fun and a good bit of swagger. I wish they’d promote him again this season.

Dedelow is interesting too. Send him to Birmingham and see what he’s got.

Does it seem like Nick and Andrew are being rushed, while Luis is forced to wait.

Lurker Laura

What else was there for Nick to do in AA?

NDSox12

Madrigal and Vaughn aren’t being rushed. They were drafted as polished college players who shouldn’t need much time in the minors. Also, Madrigal is actually a little older than Robert.

lil jimmy

Robert turns a year older tomorrow. That will be day one of “somebody” saying he’s washed up and over the hill.

As Cirensica

What kind of name is Cabera?

Greg Nix

That Robert play was amazing. I’m not breaking any new ground with this thought, but it’s absurd that they just called up MATT SKOLE and not Robert. This org is a joke.

Lurker Laura

And the CBA isn’t helping. (I am not absolving the Sox of anything. I just wonder what their actions would be if the service-time issue in the CBA weren’t there.)

Greg Nix

Their actions would still be the cheapest path possible. It shouldn’t take a league-wide CBA to protect fans from their front office, or a front office from itself.

Lurker Laura

Yes, but the cheapest path possible is manipulating service time. So in a fantasy world where this CBA doesn’t make service time manipulation such an obvious cash-saving tactic, there is no financial downside to bringing up Robert this year. It doesn’t matter, of course, because we live in this world and not my fantasy world. But I do believe we’d see Robert if the CBA didn’t offer such an upside for keeping him down.

roke1960

Whatever offers Jerry the chance to make the most money is what path he will take.

Lurker Laura

I agree with this. Without the service time issue, more money would be made by bringing Robert up right now (attendance and all that).

To repeat: I’m not defending the FO. Rather, I am a long-time complainer about the CBA, and this is me doing that again.

Trooper Galactus

It’d be nice if they took a chance on fielding the best team possible might make them the most money.

marquettepark

Bingo! JR has always been proud in delivering ? to his partners in the White Sox. They have made an enormous amount with JR at the helm. Heard that in person from some limited partners when I use to go to Fantasy Camp in Sarasota  late 1980’s – early 90’s (and that’s  before the big bucks started to roll in — not too mention the blowup in franchise valuations  past two decades which is  the-ultimate ? on the shake).

Neat_on_the_rocks

Just me or was that an amazing jump on the ball too off the bat? That was an A++ Play in Centerfield that maybe only Buxton could make. That was amazing.

I can’t find the logic in either of those moves.

MrTopaz

Gotta find out what we have in these guys. 500 ABs in the bigs, 1,000, 1,500. We gotta find out what we have in these guys.

Trooper Galactus

They don’t need even 50 ABs to know what they have in the 30-year old Matt Skole.

marquettepark

Exactly!

lil jimmy

Skole, Goins same guy.

burning-phoneix

It’s pretty simple, DFA a left hitting 1st baseman call up another left hitting 1st baseman.

jorgefabregas

Since his cup of coffee last year, I have an irrational belief that Skole cold be a good major league hitter, like 120wRC+. It’s not backed up by the numbers.

mikeyb

Pshh the numbers back it up, he’s got a career 156 wRC+!
