Tending to the Farm: Raudy Read helps Birmingham stay hot

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the previous week. Here is the 13th installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (29-49)

Weekly Record: 3-3

Last week the Knights welcomed their in-state rival the Durham Bulls to Truist Field. Despite a sluggish start to the series, the Knights were able to secure a couple of walk-off wins en route to a series split. The Knights reside in last place and are 13 games back in the International League East Division.

Charlotte had a solid week at the dish against the usually tough Durham pitching staff. The Knights wrapped the series with a .286/.351/.479 slash line and an .830 OPS. Further, they scored 38 runs, had 62 hits in 217 at-bats, 12 doubles, no triples, 10 home runs, 21 walks to 36 strikeouts, and went 4-for-6 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

The Knights pitching staff had another mediocre week on the mound. The Bulls lineup left the Charlotte staff with a team ERA of 5.84, a 1.54 WHIP, and a .237 Batting Average Against. They also allowed 39 runs (37 earned), 50 hits to 57 innings pitched, 38 walks to 59 strikeouts, hit two batters, and allowed 10 home runs. Carlos Perez: Carlos Perez was doing his thing and making lots of contact against Durham pitchers (and position players). The 25 year-old backstop slashed .385/.448/.654 for a 1.102 OPS, hit one double, two home runs (both walk-offs), seven RBI, scored six runs, and had 10 hits in 26 at-bats.

Birmingham Barons (35-40)

Weekly Record: 4-2
First Half: 31-38
Second Half: 4-2

The hot streak for the Barons has continued into the early portion of July. Birmingham was in Chattanooga and took four of six from the Lookouts. The Barons are tied for first place in the second half in the Southern League North Division.

The Barons lineup was obliterating the ball and the Chattanooga pitching staff. Birmingham slashed .332/.395/.509 for a .904 OPS. Additionally, the Barons lineup scored 49 runs, had 77 hits in 232 at-bats, 19 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 23 walks to 45 strikeouts, and went 13-for-16 on stolen bases. The Birmingham pitching staff struggled mightily against the Lookouts lineup. The Barons concluded the series with a 6.11 team ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, and a .246 Batting Average Against. On top of that, Birmingham allowed 36 runs (36 earned), 50 hits to 53 innings pitched, 31 walks to 72 strikeouts, hit four batters, and allowed 13 home runs. Raudy Read: Raudy Read made sure he packed the thunder when the Barons headed to Chattanooga. The 28 year-old slashed .500/.500/1.125 for a 1.625 OPS, hit three doubles, four home runs, seven RBI, scored five runs, and had 12 hits in 24 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (39-36)

Weekly Record: 3-3
First Half: 33-33
Second Half: 6-3

Last week the Dash were on the road visiting the Aberdeen Ironbirds. In what turned out to be a closely contested series, Winston-Salem worked a series split with the Ironbirds. The Dash are in first place and a half game up in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash had a solid performance against Aberdeen pitching last week. Winston-Salem ended the series with a .274/.368/.452 slash line and an .820 OPS. The Dash also scored 30 runs, had 57 hits in 208 at-bats, five doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 26 walks to 57 strikeouts, and went 4-for-5 on stolen bases. Winston-Salem pitching didn’t fare as well as their teammates on offense. The Dash got hit around a bit, ending the series with team ERA of 5.40, a 1.46 WHIP, and a .263 Batting Average Against. The Dash allowed 31 runs (30 earned) on 52 hits over 50 innings, 21 walks to 58 strikeouts, hitting three batters and allowing 11 home runs. Colson Montgomery: Colson Montgomery keeps up his fantastic season with a great first full week in High A. The 20 year-old slashed .368/.455/.632 for a 1.087 OPS, had two doubles, one home run, three RBI, scored five runs, and had seven hits in 19 at-bats.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (32-43)

Weekly Record: 4-2
First Half: 26-40
Second Half: 6-3

The Cannon Ballers went back to the stone age and visited the stream-less Down East Wood Ducks. The Ballers hit paydirt, winning four of six against the Wood Ducks. Kannapolis is in second place and two games back in the Carolina League South Division.

For the second week in a row, the Kannapolis offense found some success at the hands of the Down East pitching staff. The Cannon Ballers finished the week with a .234/.298/.447 slash line and a .745 OPS. The Ballers also scored 25 runs, had 46 hits in 197 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 18 walks to 60 strikeouts, and went 7-for-9 on stolen bases. The Kannapolis pitching staff was outstanding last week. The Ballers pitchers left the series with a team ERA of 2.47, a 1.22 WHIP, and a .193 Batting Average Against. In addition, they allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 35 hits over 51 innings, issuing 27 walks against 50 strikeouts, while hitting four batters and allowing two home runs. Wilfred Veras: Wilfred Veras has been putting his power on display as of late for the Ballers. The 19 year-old slashed .304/.360/.826 for a 1.186 OPS, had one double, one triple, three home runs, four RBI, scored four runs, went 2-for-2 on stolen bases, and had seven hits in 23 at-bats.

ACL White Sox (8-12)

Weekly Record: 2-3

The fourth week of the ACL season saw the White Sox rebound with a couple wins after getting shutout in the previous week. The ACL White Sox are in last place and five games back in the ACL West. Full standings of the ACL can be found here.

The bats disappeared for the ACL White Sox last week. The squad slashed a meager .161/.247/.268 for a .515 OPS. Additionally, the ACL White Sox scored 15 runs, had 24 hits in 149 at-bats, five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 17 walks to 58 strikeouts, and went 1-for-2 on stolen bases. The ACL White Sox pitching staff had another rough go last week. The staff had a team ERA of 6.64, a 1.48 WHIP, and a .293 Batting Average Against. In addition, the staff was charged with 31 earned runs to 34 runs allowed, 49 hits in 42 innings pitched, 13 walks to 42 strikeouts, hit three batters, and allowed four home runs. Dylan Burns: In a week of not many notable performances, Dylan Burns had another solid week on the mound for the ACL White Sox. In his lone start of the week, the 25-year-old threw six innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, two walks, struck out seven, and had a .261 Batting Average Against with a 1.33 WHIP.

DSL White Sox (11-9)

Weekly Record: 1-2

The DSL White Sox had a light week, with only four scheduled games, one of which got rained out. They finished the week with going one up and two down. The DSL White Sox are tied for third place and four games back in the DSL San Pedro Division. Full standings of the DSL can be found here.

Not a whole lot to go on this week, but the DSL White Sox offense scuffled in their limited at-bats. The DSL Sox hit .204/.327/.355 for a .682 OPS. They also scored 12 runs, had 19 hits in 93 at-bats, five doubles, no triples, three home runs, 12 walks to 32 strikeouts, and went 3-for-4 on stolen bases. The DSL White Sox pitching staff had a nice line in their limited opportunities last week. The staff had a team ERA of 3.46, a 1.58 WHIP, .264 Batting Average Against, 10 earned runs to 15 runs allowed, 28 hits to 26 innings pitched, 13 walks to 35 strikeouts, hit five batters, and allowed one home run. Ricardo Brizuela: Ricardo Brizuela was outstanding in his lone appearance of the week. The 19 year-old threw three innings, allowing two hits, no runs, struck out seven, and had a .182 Batting Average Against with a 0.67 WHIP.
