What’s the signal system used by the A’s catcher to relay the pitch to the pitcher? Don’t think I’ve noticed that before.

Augusto Barojas

Abreu isn’t usually the culprit, but man are the Sox an awful defensive team. And more often than not, Lynn continues to look like the Sox made a huge blunder extending him.

SocksO’Graham

Sucked the air right out of the stadium

Joliet Orange Sox

I was in favor of the Lynn extension (and most people favored it). They paid a reasonable price at the time. Lynn has had some health issues (and may or may not continue to do so). This take that extending Lynn was a mistake has been popular in these comments recently but I disagree. My take is that extending Lynn was a good idea that might not work out.

Augusto Barojas

I thought the extension was good but would have favored 1 year rather than 2 given his age. Oh well, nothing this team does ever works out all that well it seems.

jhomeslice

There was an NBC sports article saying that the Sox have made Giolito and Lynn untouchable in trade talks. Why? The only starters that should be untouchable are the other 3.

Giolito only makes 7.5M and next year is an arb year for him, so I would not give him away, but would listen to offers. I’d deal Lynn for almost nothing to any team who wants his 18M salary for next year. Take Grandal and his 18M with him.

Soft schedule

These dang pitchers with right arms

Root Cause

Is it me or are Steve and Jason looking for anything to talk about other than the game?

metasox

If I didn’t know better I would say they are practicing their shtick for a team that is out of the race

soxygen

Sometimes when you watch other teams you’ll see an outfielder really lay out to make a catch. It really happens.

metasox

There was a game recently – MN maybe – where every Sox outfielder made a diving play. The defense isn’t good but it isn’t devoid of effort

Right, I forget about that one. That was the best defense they had played all year.

Per fangraps, only the Nationals and Giants have worse defensive outfields this year than our Sox.

Vaughn and Sheets should never be in the outfield. Everyone other than Robert has at least been passable. And maybe Robert’s problems are related to whatever his health issue was – TBD.

Right Size Wrong Shape

It’s just a badly constructed roster. Hahn had a chance this offseason to reshuffle the deck and make it make more sense, but instead we have a team full of DH’s, relievers and utility guys.

Adam

It’s amazing that every other team that’s played in guaranteed rate has no trouble whatsoever ever hitting home runs.

Root Cause

To be fair, it isn’t every player. Just a few and it may be that the only way to stop them would be to trade for them.

I don’t know, I’m almost certain that every hitter in the Yankees, Red Sox, Twins, and Blue Jays went deep in a very limited sample size. The A’s are 1/3 of the way there already. And I’ll wager when we get the astros they’re gonna have similar results.

jhomeslice

People who think the Sox are going to do anything in the postseason because the Braves did last year are out of their minds.

Foulkelore

The 6th inning was his inning.

a-t

Bums.

hankthetank35

Tony was snoozin

Yolmer's gatorade

This team is pathetic.

Shingos Cheeseburgers

There’s still plenty of time for the Sox to recover and get back to what they do best: trading for prospects

jhomeslice

I would much rather them trade for prospects than trade prospects for the likes of more mediocre veteran players.

Augusto Barojas

Forcing Lynn to go 6 innings or 100 pitches no matter how he looks seems like a great strategy. Gotta give the Russa some credit.

Right Size Wrong Shape

You guys ever hear the one about the manager who always left his pitcher in an inning too long?

Augusto Barojas

I mean how many times have we seen that with Lynn alone. TLR is just the worst.

GrinnellSteve

Time to extend Harrison.

Foulkelore

Where was TLR? Get your ass out there to protect Tim from doing that.

HouseOfTheRisingSox

I agree. A suspension is likely coming for Tim.

Foulkelore

Yep, there was no way to prevent Tim from getting ejected, but as soon as TLR saw Tim turn around to argue, he should have been ready to get out there. The helmet-to-cap contact is probably going to draw a suspension.

Right Size Wrong Shape

What did he do?

Foulkelore

It was the second straight at bat for Tim where the ump made a bad call on a pitch up and in. Tim argued, got tossed, then got in the ump’s face. His helmet bill touched the ump’s cap, which will probably be counted as contact with the ump.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Ugh. Screw that guy. He probably cost us a big inning in the 6th with that call on Moncada.

Foulkelore

Yeah, that was an awful call too.

GrinnellSteve

He couldn’t have gotten out there fast enough. That escalated too quickly. I understand Timmy’s frustration with the call and with being contractually obligated to play for a moribund team, but he has to be smarter than that.

Foulkelore

See my response to HouseOfTheRisingSox. He couldn’t have gotten out there to prevent the ejection, but I think he could have been out there to prevent the contact.

GrinnellSteve

A younger manager perhaps. Have you seen Tony run?

Foulkelore

Ha, fair point.

BuehrleMan

They need to provide Tony with a rascal scooter.

BuehrleMan

And a ramp to get it out of the dugout. Maybe they can turbo charge it so he can catch some gnarly air.

Shingos Cheeseburgers

Miguel Cairo sighting!

hankthetank35

That was embarrassing by Timmy, that was a ball but very close to the edge if the zone. To react that strongly is pretty ridiculous and puts the team in a bad spot

hankthetank35

An even worse spot*

As Cirensica

This team is allergic to be above 500

Right Size Wrong Shape

I wonder what the Sox’s record is in the first game of a series?

hankthetank35

13-20

Foulkelore

Checking quickly, 12-20?

Foulkelore

Post-game show said 12-21.
