Right Size Wrong Shape

All right boys, season starts tonight. Backs are against the wall, but we’ve got ’em right where we want ’em. Romy’s my pick to click. Time to go on a tear.

funkerdan

it’s just dirt in the eye

Right Size Wrong Shape

Robert is so freaking talented. He’s completely changed his swing to a one handed swing (with the wrong hand), and he’s still dangerous.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Stupid McEwing. Why doesn’t he ever send guys in those situations?

calcetinesblancos

He’s got stage fright now.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Even the outs in this inning are missiles.

calcetinesblancos

Does Elvis use a massive bat or something? He always looks like he’s swinging a bat designed for a much bigger person.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I often have the opposite thought about TA. It seems like he’s swinging a toothpick.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Mullins is fun.

I don’t know why no one is going to Orioles games. Beautiful park, fun team. After you go to the aquarium, what else are you going to do in Baltimore?

Foulkelore

For those that didn’t see, he was completely dead for a double play, after trying to steal on a little infield bloop, and he playfully tried to jump and grab the ball being thrown over his head back to first.

I know you’re being facetious but your question made me reminisce. I haven’t been to Baltimore in a long time but I was involved in some research with people from JHU in the late 80’s and visited at least a dozen times in a 2-3 year period. Other than the aquarium and Orioles games at the old Memorial Stadium (I’ve never been to Camden Yards but I went to at least 7-8 games at Memorial Stadium), I remember thinking the Babe Ruth birthplace/museum was cool and there were several interesting Edgar Allen Poe sites. There were a lot of good neighborhood restaurants my hosts took me too.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I had the fun the one time I went. We just did the aquarium and went to a good restaurant by the ballpark. Love me some soft-shell crab. The vinegar they dip their fries in is kind of weird, though.

funkerdan

Don’t we have a second catcher?

Right Size Wrong Shape

Yep, but the other one is actually playing pretty well right now.

funkerdan

guess I’m just overly excited for prospects since we’re only 1 over .500.

Foulkelore

Tony said he’d play every third day (odd) when he first came up, so maybe we’ll see him tomorrow.

funkerdan

by my math this is the third day. guess he meant after 3 in a row.

asinwreck

*Probably jinxing it*

Giolito looks good.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Nice to see some swings and misses on the slider.

a-t

I’m thinking it, but I’m not saying it until it happens for another inning or two

calcetinesblancos

Good thing we kept playing Grandal at DH.

Whoom

We should start a pool: How low does Moncada’s BA have to go before he stops being the every day starter?

Right Size Wrong Shape

As long as he’s playing great 3B, getting big hits and hitting the ball hard occasionally, it’s not going to happen.

a-t

And get replaced by who?

Whoom

Josh Harrison? Romy Gonzales? is Jake Burger playing well? Elvis Andrus (putting Romy at SS)?

Foulkelore

Burger’s a butcher at 3B. Plus, there’s no roster room. They need a backup C (Perez), a backup SS (Gonzalez), and a backup OF (Engel). They could swap Sheets for Burger, but that just swaps a left handed hitting bad fielder for a right handed hitting bad fielder.

Kelly Wunsch N' Munch

Yet Burger is still 5th on the team in homeruns despite playing a fraction of the time of some of his teammates. To be fair that doesn’t speak to Burger as much as it speaks to the glaring ineptitude of this team offensively. Nonetheless it is intriguing to think how many he may have with the amount of at-bats some others have.

a-t

Burger’s not been hitting, esp for power, since the HBP bone bruise, which is pretty common with injuries to the dominant hand’s hand/wrist area. Which is a problem since his whole player profile is about hitting for power. So that plus his ghastly 3B defense kinda puts him on ice for now.

The other suggestions are all equivalent to the starting infield being Harrison/Andrus/Gonzalez instead of Harrison/Andrus/Moncada. Or you can throw Leury out there when he gets back, which no one wants. However you align the infield, it’s quite a worse defensively. Thus you’re betting on Gonzalez meaningfully outproducing Moncada offensively, which even with Moncada struggling seems unlikely.

Nellie Fox

Elvis, put Gonzalez at short. Moncada to the minors, bring burger up for backup.

Willardmarshall

Can’t yet bring myself to see my investment in Moncada as a sunk cost…..

asinwreck

Kevin Cheats would have aroused suspicion on the 1919 White Sox.

Joliet Orange Sox

In 1919, Kevin cheats would have had quite a St. Louis.

As Cirensica

Super Joe?

Whoom

To my eye that was all well done. Zavala went back towards second because it looked like the SS might catch the line drive. Then by the time he could reverse course and go, there was no chance.

a-t

Yeah, solid baserunning

Adam

Chances we get this run home?

Adam

Abreu- swing, swing, swing, swing and see ya later. I think it’s desperation at this point.

roke1960

Next time Abreu comes up with the bases loaded, pinch hit for him.

GrinnellSteve

So much for August Abreu.

roke1960

How can you have 9 ABs with the bases loaded and 1 RBI? Seriously, I’m 62 years old and I could probably do that, because I might have walked once. You never need to throw Jose a strike with the bases loaded, because he swings at everything.

GrinnellSteve

Historically he changes his approach to do whatever it takes when he sniffs an RBI chance, but it looks like he’s trying to wield the dagger with a game-changing extra-base hit. He’s swinging from the heels on every pitch that’s thrown.

metasox

I could sort of understand the Ks if he is trying to elevate the ball and avoid double plays

As Cirensica

Man on 3B and fewer than 2 outs. Worst situational hitting for the White Sox

a-t

Gavin Sheets, showing off the wheels he’s known for!

As Cirensica

They had an easy out at 3B

Foulkelore

Yep, that was the play with a force there. I saw that too. Thankfully, they didn’t.

Whoom

I like that he hustled. Seems rare these days.

As Cirensica

What is Eloy’s status?

Foulkelore

During the pregame show, they said he should be in the lineup tomorrow.

charlie

Hey Tony!!
Hit Moncada 8th!!
Are you afraid to hurt his feelings??

Adam

And that is why .195 moncada is still valuable

Nellie Fox

Nobody is saying he is losing games defensively but he does lose them offensively.

Adam

They struggle to score 2-3 runs a game. Not saying his bat hasn’t been terrible. But everyone has messed the bed. Everyone. He hasn’t lost a game. The putrid collection of them has. If anything yoans approach has been in the upper echelon. Results god awful though.

charlie

His approach..are you kidding?? Because he takes a few pitches and then ends up getting called out by far more than anyone in the league? So stiff he can’t reach a low strike?

Whoom

His d-war is pretty good, but his o-war drags it down to the point where he has basically no chance of being a 1 WAR player. That’s pretty awful. Unfortunately its looking more and more like 2019 was an aberration.

Right Size Wrong Shape

It looks like this season is the aberration.

Whoom

To be fair, I think both 2019, and 2022 are outliers in his offensive production.

Joliet Orange Sox

I agree with your first two sentences. Moncada is lost at the plate this year and his offensive production has been awful.

My disagreement comes when you imply that Moncada has only had one good year (2019). In 2021, Moncada produced 4.0 fWAR which is a very good year. (For comparison, it is higher than the highest fWAR Konerko ever produced. Moncada also had a higher fWAR in 2021 than the best season Joe Crede ever had.)

Whoom

Yeah, I acknowledge that below.

GrinnellSteve

What a play by Yoyo!

a-t

And that’s why Yoan is gonna stay starting at 3B.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Duck snort-a-go-go

Right Size Wrong Shape

Uh, Romy?

Right Size Wrong Shape

Robert’s showing a lot of guts right now.

Nellie Fox

Is he hurt? The last swing was one handed

Right Size Wrong Shape

He’s been swinging with his right hand only since he came back. He’s definitely not right, but I still think they’re better with Robert at half strength than with those outfields they fielded with him out.

Whoom

Damn! Sheets absolutely crushed that ball, just not quite enough air!

vanillablue

The title of the recap better be “Singles Going Steady” or I’m canceling my subscription.

Joliet Orange Sox

I upvoted this in the fervent hope that you are referring to the fantastic Buzzcocks compilation album.

asinwreck

And if this team is dismantled, the Don Caballero play on said brilliant album would be appropriate for the title of that roster analysis.

Joliet Orange Sox

I think this great Buzzcocks’ song summarizes all our feelings about the Sox during the Reinsdorf era.

(I recognize that people younger than Baby Boomers do not know the Buzzcocks.)

vanillablue

yup. “Boredom” and “Something’s Gone Wrong Again” fit this season the best.

calcetinesblancos

Good reference. “Oh Shit” would be a good way to describe this season.

dwjm3

What a novel concept playing Vaughn at a position he is built to field

Right Size Wrong Shape

He’s looked really good over there tonight.

a-t

Yeah he’s definitely a capable 1B. This roster is not much more than a trade or two of corner guys for a middle infielder away from considerably better balance.

Adam

Once a week they play a really good game and give hope. We know it will be dashed shortly but it feels so good in the moment

Whoom

One thing that was pleasantly surprising tonight is how well Giolito pitched against a team that has been scalding the ball lately.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I like seeing Seby come up late in games.

Nellie Fox

Hendricks is real good when he has to but put him in with a big lead, I am not sure he concentrates as much.

ChiSoxND12

His 1.07 WHIP definitely seems to be comprised of a lot of 2 runner innings and a lot of 0 runner innings. And sometimes the 2 runner innings include a dinger like tonight
