I really wish TA could grasp the fact that leading off by swinging at the first pitch and making an out is literally the worst possible mistake you can make. You screw up the inning, limit the pitchers pitch count, conserve his energy. So much bad and yet he does it all the time

funkerdan

apparently most of our lineup today thinks it’s awesome.

Adam

Yep, 17 pitches over 2 innings. It would be one thing if they were hard outs. Weak contact after weak contact. Makes you wonder what they’re looking for

a-t

Vaughn’s lineout was .500 xBA, Burger’s was 106mph and .670 xBA.

Adam

Are you watching? If Vaughns out was an xba of .500 I’m calling shenanigans. It was the easiest out I’ve seen in my life

Foulkelore

The first pitch swing giveth, and the first pitch swing taketh away, as Tim just showed

Adam

Or…Frazier worked a walk, Romy swung 2-0, Zavala struck out after working 7-9 pitches so by the time Tim came up the pitcher was 15+ pitches in to the inning.

When Tim goes down on 1 pitch. Now the pitch knows he can throw an easy strike over to the 2 hitter. He’s not swinging. Now the 2 hitter is behind in the count. And the 3 hitter comes to the plate when the pitcher is at 5-6 pitches and completely fresh

phillyd

But the 2 hitter swung at the first pitch in the 1st inning.

I don’t know what Kopech did with two extra days of rest but it sure looks like it fuckin worked huh

Foulkelore

The over/under for Kopech strikeouts was 4.5 today. He had the over after 2 innings.

Joliet Orange Sox

One thing is that the velocity of his fastball is averaging 96.9 mph today which is 1.2 mph above his season average.

HallofFrank

If this is the new Kopech, a Cease-Giolito-Kopech could be a really good 1-2-3. They might have to shuffle the rotation occasionally to build in extra rest for Kopech. But I’m fine with that, if this is the prize.

a-t

I think the extra time between starts was probably to do work on his mechanics not actual fatigue tbh

OldMMJ87

Romy Gonzalez swinging in a 2-0 count after a four-pitch walk is infuriating.

a-t

Patience? Taking a bunch of close pitches for walks? Who tf are these guys

a-t

bases loaded no one out, got the RBI… barely

Adam

Not to jump to conclusions based on a small sample size…but Romy needs to be our 2nd baseman.

roke1960

If he keeps this up, they will be comparing Ben Zobrist’s career to Romy’s.

As Cirensica

Ohhh stop it. 😋

roke1960

I couldn’t help myself!

Foulkelore

I was thinking about this too. If Romy keeps showing life with the bat, will they make the move to bench the veteran so he can keep playing?

Foulkelore

I know Vaughn’s slow, but how did he not score from second on that? Oh, the replay showed he didn’t read it well as I was typing. Well, Romy just doubled, so it doesn’t matter. I should just keep typing this comment so they keep doing good things.

noted cleveland guardians killers Roman Gonzalez and Clint Frazier

NDSox12

You mean Roman Gonzalez and Jackson Frazier?

brianp88

This is more like it!

KaiserSouszay

I know it’s a small sample size but…. have they found something with Frazier?

Could be some interesting decisions when Eloy is ready.

Adam

I think Frazier playing center may be the test. If he can handle it adequately, haselys gotta go. Frazier is swiping bags too. Filling in all the pieces hasely would besides hitting lefty. And hasely hasn’t really been hitting for a while

a-t

Frazier’s pretty bad defensively in a corner, he can’t really handle CF

Adam

Yeah I was pretty shocked when I saw the lineup today and he was there. I figured Hasely

KaiserSouszay

Oh I agree, that he sticks over Hasely. I wonder how the DH spot works with Burger/Eloy. I think you have to keep Sheets in the lineup regularly too. I think Vaughn winds up sitting more often, we’ll see.

Probably 1st base platoon with Sheets/Vaughn.

I do love conversations amongst decent options though. Much better than last year when it was like Leury or Josh? Hmm…

Weino17

Not a chance.

Adam

Never take Benetti and Stones greatness for granted. I have to watch on the Guards feed today. They’re awful in general. But Matt Underwood has referenced our 3rd base coach….Joey Cora….3 times

La Chispa!

Is it time to start worrying about Seby as a viable backup catcher? He is such an easy out. With the amount of time Grandal needs off, they might want to see what Carlos Perez can do.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I agree. That’s why it was frustrated that they didn’t at least start Perez behind the plate a couple of times when he was up before so that they might get a better idea of what they had.

As Cirensica

Seby is out of options. If we called up Perez, we surely are gonna lose Seby

roke1960

Didn’t know that. Thanks.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I know that. Which again, is frustrating that they didn’t use the opportunity that they had to evaluate Perez.

NDSox12

Perhaps… but better to have an automatic out as the backup catcher than the starter like the Guardians.

Adam

Our staff seems to really respect Seby. That’s big. And hitting for backup catchers is not exactly something you see much of around the league. It’s a really tough job.

I think the difference in his numbers from last year is he played more last year as a regular. In contrast to Perez if he comes up and hits a bit more but is bad defensively, I’d rather have Seby.

And I like Perez a lot. I could see split duty next year if we don’t pick up anyone.

a-t

No. Seby has become an excellent defensive catcher the past few years. Perez is merely okay at framing but can’t throw a runner out to save his life. A backup C’s bat is far less important than his glove, arm, and handling of pitchers.

Right Size Wrong Shape

His caught stealing percentage is bad this season, but decent over his career. I know that he has a weak arm, but compensates with a quick release. It would be interesting to see how he fares against major league baserunners.
