Sporcle Saturday: That’s a lotta hits

Good morning!

One of the round milestones I was on the lookout for this season was Tim Anderson’s quest for career hit number 1,000. Alas, Anderson sits on the injured list 86 hits shy. Among current White Sox players it’s Anderson at 914 and then nobody else anywhere near him. Entering Friday’s game Yoan Moncada has 621 hits followed by Eloy, all the way down at 331.

Assuming Anderson gets healthy and stays healthy (feel free to laugh heartily at said assumption; there’s a reason “ass” and “u” are in the word, etc.), mid-summer seems around the time he’d enter the franchise 1,000 hit club. For now, that club remains at 29 players and is what I’m quizzing you about today: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the number of hits and the tenure of the player in question.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Every position on the diamond is represented on this list, aside from pitcher.
  • The top two players on this list combined for just 80 home runs; meanwhile, the next two combined for 880!
  • The average triple-slash of the players on this list: .283/.351/.413.

29/29 with 6:18 left. I was going more slowly because I was trying to get them in descending order of hits, and of course that’s impossible because of the last entry in the first column.

The first name on this list played for a team mired in mediocrity during his entire Hall of Fame career. Fitting he tops the list on this April 2023 quiz.

This is a list that includes almost every position player who was good for the Sox over any significant length of time. I got an extremely rare-for-me perfect score but it took me almost the full time. I’ve learned several of these names entirely from previous quizzes.

As I did the quiz, I thought that it was possible that you and roke would each get perfect scores in under a minute. Thanks for making the quiz bizarrely challenging for yourself to make your time only 3 times faster than mine instead of 10 times faster!

Typos alone would make it impossible for me to get this many entries right in under a minute! Maybe two minutes would be possible. I bet roke beats my time.

The first time I heard the old joke breaking down the word “assume” was from Tony Randall as Felix Unger in an episode of The Odd Couple in the early 1970’s. My mom was mortified that he said “ass” on TV because 50 years ago it was a big deal to say that.

The first time I heard it was on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

27/29. As usual, I blanked out on a couple of guys, the player/manager of the Hitless Wonders (1151 hits) and the guy with 1136. Great quiz, Ted!

Every time I see a list for White Sox leaders in an offensive category, I instantly guess Zeke Bonura. Didn’t pay off this time.
