White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 7, 2022

While the White Sox aren’t faring so well on their second trade involving Reese McGuire, they came out ahead on their first. Zack Collins is now a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates after the Blue Jays designated Collins for assignment.
Collins bounced between Toronto and Triple-A Buffalo this season as a typical third catcher does, but he went 3-for-36 with 18 strikeouts over his last 42 plate appearances with the Blue Jays, dragging his line down to .194/.266/.417 after a hot start. He didn’t fare much better with the Bisons (.195/.361/.398).
Charlotte 9, Nashville 8
- Mark Payton returned to Triple-A with a vengeance: 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and four RBIs.
- Lenyn Sosa went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
- Unusual line for Carlos Pérez: 2-for-5 with a homer, double and three strikeouts.
- Adam Haseley was 1-for-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base.
- Yolbert Sánchez went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Chattanooga 3, Birmingham 0
- Bryan Ramos and Oscar Colás went 0-for-3.
- So did Yoelqui Céspedes and DJ Gladney, but with two strikeouts apiece.
- Luis Mieses had two of the Barons’ three hits, and struck out his other time at bat. He also stole a base.
- Wes Kath was 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
- Wilfred Veras had the other hit, and also struck out during a 1-for-3 night.
- Adam Hackenberg struck out all three times.
- Jared Kelley was effectively wild: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 K, 28 of 59 pitches for strikes.
Brooklyn 5, Winston-Salem 2
- Colby Smelley was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Augusta 3, Kannapolis 2
- Jordan Sprinkle and Brooks Baldwin both were 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
- Jacob Burke went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
- Logan Glass wore the collar and silver sombrero.
Feels like Zack Collins flaming out is more a reminder of how poorly this organization drafts.
There are much better examples of the sox drafting poorly. Collins is more a case of development. While he had big questions about his catching defense the bat was always suppose to play. You take a kid who hit the crap out of the ball at a big time D1 program in arguably the 2nd best conference in college baseball and he just doesnt hit enough to matter in the pros to me thats on the development team. Collins was a consensus 1st round pick it wasnt some reach the sox made.
Agree hard with this. I do wonder if taking him off catcher while he was in the minors would have made a difference, but considering where the org. was in terms of developmental staff when he was drafted, probably not.
Maybe they should have allowed him to use an aluminum bat.
The AL bats the NCAA uses are somewhat comparable to wood, I believe. I remember the rule being instituted around 2008ish, thereabouts, and witnessed the drop offs in offensive power and production.

Nick Hostetler seemed like a nice guy. I don’t miss having him as amateur scouting director. Whether it was him, or a philosophy from above, the drafts have gotten more interesting under Mike Shirley.
(I was enthusiastic about Hostetler when he came in, as Doug Laumann’s drafts weren’t great either. Nor were Duane Shaffer’s. This line of thought makes me miss Al Goldis, and now younger readers will be asking me why I am yelling at clouds.)

The First American Bank commercials were on for decades (at least on WXRT in Chicago) and were done by the people who did Chickenman (He’s Everywhere! He’s Everywhere!) way back when and who also did lots and lots of radio commercials.

It seems to me that we should get one of these outfielders up to replace Robert until he is unquestionably healthy, even if that is in 2023.
We have several extra “e’s” in the minor league system: Smelley, Kelley, and Haseley.
They don’t meet the requirements of playing 1st base.
