As Cirensica

It’s raining again
Oh no my love is at an end
Oh no it’s raining again
You know it’s hard to pretend

GrinnellSteve

Katz and Cease featured prominently in this piece on 538.

Foulkelore

Thanks for sharing – they are pretty much the whole article.

a-t

Alright, buckos, time to show what you’re made of.

Foulkelore

First of three straight elimination games for Sox. It’s now or never.

Foulkelore

Ugh, might as well put Eloy out there.

Shingos Cheeseburgers

A little heavy on the metaphor there, AJ

As Cirensica

Cease a bit wild. Nervousness probably

Foulkelore

Everybody gets a 3-1 count tonight.

As Cirensica

Cease is way off tonight. Against the Guardians you have to throw strikes. They don’t chase.

Foulkelore

Yeah, unfortunately, he’s not sharp yet. Maybe he’ll be able to find it and string some good, efficient innings together.

Foulkelore

There we go. That was a much better third inning.

Shingos Cheeseburgers

Just call him Tadahito Harrison

As Cirensica

You can say that again

Foulkelore

Yes, SHOTHO!

Foulkelore

In 4 innings, I believe that is 9 ground outs to go with 1 hit, 1 pop out, and 2 strike outs.

metasox

Run-of-the-mill righty and first game of a series. Kryptonite

denman

Okay, the Sox have reached their limit of groundballs; time to hit some balls in the air.

Foulkelore

If they stay down a run or two when Cease has to leave, I’m going to be very curious to see who comes in. Normally, that would be a low leverage reliever for them, but they need to treat all three of these games more like elimination games.

a-t

Six innings, one run is pretty good given how dreadful the fastball command has been for Dylan.

Now score some goddamn runs, you bums.

upnorthsox

Yes surprising he was able to get thru the whole 6th.

Foulkelore

Yes, Eloy!

denman

Bases loaded and nobody out; odds are what…..1 in 5 the Sox score a run?

As Cirensica

The Guardians committed a rare and costly error. DSNB

As Cirensica

Robert almost one out of the park with one hand

Foulkelore

Indeed he did.

Foulkelore

The Sox better have someone else getting warm right now.

Yolmer's gatorade

Is Reylo dead?

dwjm3

Yup

Reylo
Gaveman
Liam

Yolmer's gatorade

Might have gone Bummer instead of Graveman, but definitely Reylo in the 7th.

Foulkelore

Yep, or if you were going to play matchups with Bummer for the 1-4 part of the order, they could have went Graveman, Bummer, Hendriks. Any way you look at it, it wasn’t the right call.

dwjm3

I’m not pitching Jimmy in a do or die game

I think Cairo was dumb here

As Cirensica

Lambert has been very good

dwjm3

I’m not using a guy that has largely been a career minor leaguer when my season is on the line

As Cirensica

That’s fair

As Cirensica

Bummer allowing an inherit runner to score?!?
Shocking

As Cirensica

I meant…runners

Shingos Cheeseburgers

Welp just gonna have to load the bases and hope for some more errors

dwjm3

Crap pitcher selection …crap umpiring

Joliet Orange Sox

Too bad the home plate ump missed that call. Really just too bad.

ChiSoxND12

Lambert was a poor call there. The 3-batter minimum rule is an asinine rule. And not walking Ramirez was foolish, don’t care that it was an INF single and that Naylor also singled

And Rosario was safe by plenty of course. A lot of stupid that inning

Foulkelore

There’s Lopez. It kind of would have been cool to see him start the 7th.

As Cirensica

Dwjm3 made a good point. It was the bottom of the order Lambert needed to deal with but this is a key game. You have to use your best relievers in high leverage. Joe Kelly absence is important here. Kelly has been awful but the Guardians cannot hit against him for some reason. The 7th was Kelly’s

metasox

If this was the post-season, can’t imagine Lambert comes in there. Hendriks, Graveman, Lopez and I guess Bummer should be taking as many innings as possible, unless maybe the lead was the larger

Another case with Vaughn already out. So Sheets hits for Engel?

Last edited 2 months ago by metasox
As Cirensica

Maybe Engel can find one there

metasox

Nope

SoxBulldog13

Man. Vaughans AB earlier was one of worst I’ve seen from him. Overall really bad AB’s last couple innings. Kwan is an absolute thorn. Hopefully can keep him at 3rd. Gotta get by Naylor here

As Cirensica

Mercy, that at bat by Engel was hard to watch. He looks like he cannot hit major league pitches. He has ” non tendered” stuff all over his face.

metasox

He arguably could have been replaced during the season

As Cirensica

Someone named Oscar…

As Cirensica

Hendriks for 2 innings?

As Cirensica

I guess no

SoxBulldog13

The torture is real

SoxBulldog13

Last 3 bullets, down 2, to a dominant but human closer. AJ and Lambert are my biggest disappointments tonight. Lambert reliable alllll second half but picks biggest game of the year to lose his control? AJ error but I’m more disappointed in at least one terrible AB (check swing 1st pitch dribbler?) in a crucial situation.

Foulkelore

Ugh, I don’t feel good about the Manfred Man deciding this.

As Cirensica

Naylor is the new Ryan Rayburn

GrinnellSteve

I don’t like walking Ramirez. Didn’t even get to finish the thought.

As Cirensica

i think it was the right call

GrinnellSteve

Good chance he could have stolen second. Then you’re looking at possibly going down 2 runs. Instead, no steal but heads-up running to get to third on Naylor’s hit. That led to the second run. Maybe he gets a hit, but there’s, what, a 60% chance he makes an out.

Joliet Orange Sox

I would’ve walked Ramirez. He’s just too good to pitch to with first and second empty in that situation. It didn’t work out but I think you have to walk Ramirez.

Foulkelore

Hustle from their superstar gets them an extra run, actually two extra runs with him beating out the ground ball that tied it. There’s something to be said for that.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Did the Sox already lose their challenge? Because Ramirez was out at third.

Foulkelore

I thought he was at first, but wasn’t sure on the replay. Anyway, they used their challenge but it doesn’t matter in the 10th. Anybody can ask for a review from the 8th inning on.

Last edited 2 months ago by Foulkelore
Right Size Wrong Shape

So why didn’t they? It cost them the 5th run.

Foulkelore

Yeah, I don’t know. They had nothing to lose by asking for a review.

As Cirensica

and now decisive run

SoxBulldog13

Yea I wanted crew chief on that one AND I wanted a closer look at the putout at 2nd of Leury. Anyhow, still alive. Cmon Diekman no walks!

SoxBulldog13

Should’ve added. No wild pitches either. Jeez man. Are we really down to Diekman. Pray

ChiSoxND12

Cleveland’s the better team. Francona of course, the better manager (for either of ours). Too bad he wasn’t totally available and with ties to the Sox back when Jer coaxed RV off of his vineyard

Last edited 2 months ago by ChiSoxND12
Shingos Cheeseburgers

Cleveland, when not really trying, has a better team than what took half a decade of work of the Sox trying their hardest.

As Cirensica

Not dead yet

As Cirensica

I think I have awaken my neighbors….ABREU!!!!!Extend this man

SoxBulldog13

Yep. I did too haha

SoxBulldog13

In Denver so nobody knows what in the heck I could be cheering for

Foulkelore

Up to Abreu to keep this going.

SoxBulldog13

Gotta admit, my confidence was low. Way to go Jose! Now we need Diekman to throw strikes

Foulkelore

Alright, Jose tied it!!!

GrinnellSteve

Who’da thunk it?

Foulkelore

Diekman eh? I guess good options are limited at this point. They only have Banks, Ruiz, and Velasquez outside of Diekman, if they don’t want to do something crazy with a starter.

As Cirensica

Guardians have also used their best relievers

Foulkelore

Yep, war of attrition at this point.

SoxBulldog13

Diekman was a terrible decision. Prob with Diekman is control. Cleveland makes pitchers throw strikes.

SoxBulldog13

Graveman second inning, Velasquez, Ruiz. Anyone but Diekman.

As Cirensica

This Manfred Man stuff is killing me

GrinnellSteve

They should have put Romy at 2nd and Leury on the mound.

Foulkelore

Welp …

Shingos Cheeseburgers

A couple of those runners are Manfred men but regardless this isn’t what you want out of your bullpen in the highest leverage innings of the year

Foulkelore

Off of their one trade acquisition too

GrinnellSteve

Diekman is largely useless.

As Cirensica

Are you ready for another year of Diekman? I am not.
I have an early meeting tomorrow so this is it. See ya tomorrow.

GrinnellSteve

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell;
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it; for I love you so,
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O, if (I say) you look upon this verse,
When I (perhaps) compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse,
But let your love even with my life decay,
Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
And mock you with me after I am gone.

Shingos Cheeseburgers

Oh hell yeah now we’re talking full collapse

GrinnellSteve

That was shameful. What a disgusting exhibition.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Not thrilled with how Cairo has managed this game, which is essentially do-or-die. I think he should have gone with Hendriks for 2 innings, then Graveman for 2 innings. Also curious to hear the explanation for not challenging the tag on Ramirez at third.

Foulkelore

I agree. I wasn’t thrilled with Lambert for the 7th either, even though that wasn’t as egregious. It may have never went to extra innings if a better pitcher started the 7th. And even though the game was probably over, someone should have been warming to replace Diekman if he faltered.

dsbatt

On bright side, hopefully this makes it unlikely that they do something stupid and hire Cairo if TLR doesn’t return. I’d be open to keeping Katz, but otherwise I think they need to completely clean house on coaching staff.
