First Pitch: White Sox vs. Royals

Guaranteed Rate Field exterior

About an hour before first pitch, the White Sox anthat Tony La Russa will not be managing tonight’s game at the direction of his doctors, and he’s scheduled to undergo further medical testing on Wednesday. Miguel Cairo will be managing in his place.

La Russa was at Guaranteed Rate Field before the game and on his normal schedule. He held his usual media session and was seen talking to Rick Hahn during batting practice.

HallofFrank

Is this the Birmingham Barons game thread?

You don’t want to see that one either.

Except in BHam I can find reasons for positivity. For example: Jared Kelley with 6 Ks and 0 BBs in AA? I like.

Foulkelore

I don’t know how good Miguel Cairo would be as a full time manager, but the 10 second clip of him in the dugout during the pregame showed more life than I’ve seen from Tony all year.

As Cirensica

He is 2×0 for life. Won the field of dreams game to boot

calcetinesblancos

Yeah but he is channeling his inner Russa by starting Leury.

Foulkelore

It might be Tony’s lineup still. Reports are Tony was fine at 4 pm. The lineup was probably in by then.

calcetinesblancos

Oh I didn’t realize that was the situation.

Adam

Lou Brown out as the Sox continue their 2022 cosplay of Major League II

HallofFrank

So what’s the % chance we’ve seen the last TLR managed White Sox game already?

calcetinesblancos

0%

HallofFrank

Eh, I’ll put it at 3-5%. If it’s even semi-serious, it’s not worth coming back this season.

Adam

The good news is Lou going to the hospital is what woke that team up

Foulkelore

Unfortunately, we didn’t add an outfielder at the deadline to tell Jose or Eloy that they have no marbles (if marbles = home run power).

MasGarcias

And suddenly the 2022 White Sox have hope… Too bad it was too late after that lineup card.
I wanted to respond to the official Twitter posting of the lineup but four minutes after posting there were already Dozens of Sell the Team-enough said.

Adam

Other teams certainly don’t hit cheap homers vs the sox. 437 feet. Ouch

dwjm3

Succession planning brought to you by Jerry:

Your owner and manager could die in the offseason

Right Size Wrong Shape

Mickey’s?

Nellie Fox

40 pitches… 2 innings? Can we find a pitcher who can get somebody out on 10-15 pitches per inning?

evenyoudorn

Nothing to add to this thread but my presence.

Adam

Well every fan is welcome….even you dorn

Foulkelore

Awww, Leury didn’t come through. I’m shocked.

Nellie Fox

Things have not changed since opening day…. Its called insanity

calcetinesblancos

…but did he stay out of the double play?

evenyoudorn

.504 OPS looks like a typo or maybe a graduate business course.

KC has a lot of guys without chins.

At least next year the Sox will lose to a larger variety of teams

True, we can travel to new lands and see them get their asses kicked there.

Nellie Fox

Sox came out tonite with a chip on their shoulder and it is showing

Shingos Cheeseburgers

60 Day IL – Shoulder (Chipped)

Nellie Fox

Giolito would not be a 5th starter for the cubs….. Sad

Right Size Wrong Shape

Who?

That’s a strong human being.

Foulkelore

No kidding. He just kind of flicked the ball out there, and I looked away thinking nothing of it. Then, I looked back and it was flying out of the park.

As Cirensica

2 HRs by the Royals and we still don’t have a single player with 15 HRs

soxygen

If they want to speed up the game, one thing they could do is make hitters wear their padding all the way around the bases. The only thing more boring than watching these guys take off their elbow pads is watching a pitching change.

Adam

It would be entertaining but with all that equipment on our guys would never be able to advance more than one base at a time. What a travesty

As Cirensica

Pollock can only hit LH pitching. He looked awful. 2 Ks already.

calcetinesblancos

I really don’t get why he always starts over Engel.

As Cirensica

You don’t? Did you forget who manages this team?

ChiSoxND12

Because Engel is hitting like he did in 2017-18

Foulkelore

The two pitches Pollock has chased for strikeouts tonight have probably been a combined 3 feet out of the strike zone.

Adam

How is Vaughn slower than 2005 Frank Thomas?

Foulkelore

Often, speed is inversely proportional to power. The fast guys don’t hit home runs, and the slow guys hit for power. If the White Sox power was inversely proportional to how they ran, they’d be approaching the 2019 Twins/Yankees in home runs.

Foulkelore

This isn’t fair that the Royals get to hit the balls that go out of the park, and the Sox don’t.

As Cirensica

Pathetic our inability to hit homers

Fire Cairo

abehickock

I think the rebuild is coming along just fine. The Royals rebuild.

soxygen

The kids can play

Foulkelore

” … against the White Sox.” (.563 win percentage vs. White Sox, and .381 win percentage vs. everybody else)

soxygen

Damn, that’s bad

Nellie Fox

Bye, all, it has been fun but I just can’t watch this bull shit every game and try to be nice on this forum at the same time. This team keeps putting the same shit on the field every game but expects a different result.

Adam

As the premier sports writer of our time, one Jim Margalus, has stated – you can’t let the white sox ruin your night.

This is critical, because it’s the one thing they are really good at. Come back when you’re ready good sir

Southside Hitman

Hey Folks, love the knowledge I gain by being part of this group yes, an old dog can learn new tricks! 🙂 I’m curious & looking for opinions; Josh Donaldson made a point of calling Lucas Giolito out for the “sticky substance thing” or lack thereof. Everyone knows Donaldson is dick, but, is that in play here? Or, are Lucas’s problems mental/mechanical?

He pitched fine last year after the sticky stuff ban. There’s something else going on.

calcetinesblancos

I can’t believe we’re getting shut out by Paul Dano.

Root Cause

For everyone’s sake, I hope TLR just had a heart fart and Mrs. TLR demands that he grow up and retire.

Foulkelore

And then Tony talks Jerry into a Grumpy Old Men scenario, and they retire together to have comedic hijinks?

calcetinesblancos

If I see Tony with the chicklets as teeth I might be scarred for life.

ChiSoxND12

You might be thinking of Dennis the Menace Walter Matthau

Root Cause

Yes, Jerry re-hires Tony in the first scene. 🙁

soxygen

Scrolling through the game logs, it looks like this Singer fellow has given up 4 ER in 25 IP versus the Sox this year (thru the 4th today). That’s a 1.44 ERA.

This team is collapsing so badly it will be pretty hard for even a stubborn old fool like Jerry to rationalize Tony coming back.

I’m not having fun.

I am. I switch to watch The Office in Netflix. I just check in here every now and then.

a-t

Sheets clawing his way back into the convo. I appreciate that from him

Foulkelore

There we go. Thank you, Gavin. Hit the ball over the wall.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Such a sweet power swing.

Foulkelore

Yep, now if he could just start to do it on the road. In his career, he has 18 home runs in 236 PAs at home vs. 3 home runs in 252 PAs on the road before today.

As Cirensica

Should I stop watching the office? Looks like interesting things are happening

Foulkelore

The answer will be, “yes” once you get to a certain season, but that’s probably not what you meant.

No, go back to the Office. We’ll call you.

Ok..i am back watching

I’m sensing a pattern.

Me too. I don’t like it 😋

HallofFrank

It’s becoming more and more clear that Gavin Sheets doesn’t fit in on this team.

DSNB

Uh, Miguel?

Foulkelore

Turns out, Miguel really felt Tony pulled his starters too quickly.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I guess he doesn’t believe that this is Giolito’s inning.

Foulkelore

Nope, nevermind, he heard you.

Apparently TLR and Hahn were talking to Dave Stewart on the field before the game, and before TLR had to leave. The only way this season could get worse – start getting advice from Dave Stewart.

Yeah, I’m just glad Hahn would never trade interesting prospects for a below average, aging pitcher.

The Basabe trade is my favorite Stewart gaffe.

As Cirensica

Banks is our new high leverage pitcher now?

Nice work Tanner.

Gavin Sheets, right fielder.

Foulkelore

Oh yeah, that’s the problem with Sheets. He’s not really an outfielder.

Right Size Wrong Shape

“My dad was an outfielder” is all the qualifications you need to suit up out there for the Sox.

soxygen

To be fair, Pollock got a really poor jump before picking up some speed at the end there

Vaughn-Pollock-Sheets is a pretty ungodly outfield

soxygen

No doubt. I don’t mind AJ in left but any day he is our best defensive outfielder is a bad day.

Last edited 1 year ago by soxygen
As Cirensica

what’s Robert status? I thought they said he was gonna be off just this weekend.

As Cirensica

This team really needs to stop swinging to pitches outside of the strike zone. That grounder by Abreu on a pitch way outside. You can’t do damage that way

soxygen

Speaking of bad defense, Andrew Vaughn

Lol Kelly shook off two signs before throwing the one that got launched over the fence.

As Cirensica

5 loses in a row vs the Dbacks and Kansas
Soft schedule

soxygen

This month with Boston, Reese McGuire is 19 for 48 and has an OPS of .912.

As Cirensica

And Hahn still has a job

ecivokrak

2022 White Sox = day late, dollar short

Yolmer

At least Gavin Sheets and Eloy are increasing their trade value for next year.
