Seeing Giolito on the mound has made me less pessimistic regardless of how today goes.
Garcia, Haseley, Mendick is one ugly ass bottom 1/3 of the order. But hey, at least they are not hitting at the top!
Pretty sure that’s a worse trio of hitters than the Sox started all of last year. Quite an accomplishment.
I haven’t checked but I expect there was a game last year with Leury, Hamilton, and Mendick all playing. Leury and Mendick are the same but Hasseley’s career batting numbers (OPS+ = 82) are bad but significantly better than Hamilton’s (OPS+ = 67).
I recognize that neither of these trios is good to see.
I would give you credit, except Garcia 2022 appears to be much worse than 2021. Plus Haseley has had a sub-.600 OPS since 2020 even in the minors. I’ll go with today’s trio as worse!
Hasseley has 30 PA’s in the time period you are referring to. I’m not saying Hasseley is an average or above average hitter. I’m saying he is not as bad a hitter as Billy Hamilton.
As for Leury, I don’t think he’s suddenly a different guy this year from last year. His OPS was under 0.500 till mid-May last year (in a season that started April 1). He’ll have some good streaks and some bad streaks and end up meh as always.
Haseley had a .577 OPS in 156 AB’s at AAA last year, one reason he had so few mlb PA’s. Suffice to say both he and Hamilton are dreadful hitters, and both trios about as bad as it gets.
Yeah, this crap needs to stop until they’re either less shorthanded or start rolling a bit. They could have Engel in CF and Burger at 3B today, even with the injuries. Tony is starting the end-of-bench players way too much to start the season, which is compounding their offensive problems due to missing injured players.
TLR makes everything worse. That is his superpower.
Amazing, not even 3 weeks into the season and the Sox outfield is already such a disaster that they have to start someone that is a worse hitter than Eaton or Lamb.
They are choosing to start Haseley, unless I missed something. With this team and injury history, it’s certainly possible Engel’s leg fell off while taking routine fly balls before the game. Hopefully, Robert is back Tuesday, which might help limit Tony playing with his end-of-bench toys so much.
It sucks getting another guy thrown out at the plate this week, but with Leury on deck and how close it was, that was the right decision to try there.
Hell yeah. Heck, if Abreu scored, might as well send Sheets home too!
It still angers be that Leury and Harrison were considered sufficient at second base.
Cesar Hernandez with a .540 OPS so far looks like an upgrade to both of them. To give an idea how bad those two have started off.
Next few games I’d like to see Mendick over Garcia. He’s hitting a little bit at least. Give Leury a break, playing him every damn inning of every game isn’t helping him anyway, or the team.

There have been a lot of hot takes on this site in the last couple days about players being good or bad. Yesterday, someone (not the poster I’m replying to here) went after TA!
I’m going to take the unpopular position that baseball players cannot really be evaluated over very small sample sizes. It’s a game of fluctuations and streaks that tempt us to see patterns where there often are none. Bummer is a 28-year-old with over 200 major league appearances and overall he’s been a good major league reliever. I’ll wait before changing my mind about him.

Godoy was horrible today. The story of the game just might end up being Bummer and Hendriks both walking him ahead of Buxton with late leads. I hope it’s not.

PECOTA had the Twins winning 91 in ’21. Taking the pessimistic view, it is scary to think whether the Sox could do a similar faceplant.
This team was probably doomed the moment they hired La Russa.
I have been trying to stay away from this view but pitching to Buxton with a base empty makes think we don’t have a good manager.
It made no sense at all, I yelled at my screen as it got to 3-1. What is the downside?

I mean no exaggeration, TLR has at times been about the worst manager that I’ve ever witnessed. I don’t even think Bevington was any worse.
And though he did walk Godoy, a reliever who rarely walks anybody, so less of a chance of a run scoring with a bases loaded walk.

One of my favorite Sox factoids is since Jerry took over the Marlins have more playoff series victories (7) than the Sox (3). And the Marlins had to wait ten years to start playing.
To be fair they were doomed the moment they decided to rebuild again with the same brain trust that didn’t even come close the first time.

Though it is plenty early and there is reason for optimism to reach the post-season, I think what we all wanted to see was a team that looked like it could compete in the post-season, not another one and done. This doesn’t look like that.

I’m sorry, but pitching to Buxton with a base open and the winning run on base already is a fireable offense. Tony has got to be the worst manager in the majors right now. There is NO explanation for pitching to Buxton there that makes any sense. I’m beginning to think that Tony is trying to sabotage this team. I can’t think of any other reason for some of his decisions.
I’ve had alcoholics in my family. Truly self destructive tendencies. I’m not trying to exaggerate here, but I do think TLR seems to be prone to almost crazy decisions that nobody can understand. Yes, it almost does seem like sabotage. Maybe sub-consciously it is. He may not even be aware of it. He is not fit for his job, that is totally obvious.
Somebody has to start noticing…the players, Cairo, Hahn. Something needs to be done. This level of uncompetency is beyond belief
It’s sad. I mean as much as I hate the fact that they hired him, I do feel sorry for him to a point. He is a lost soul. Hiring him at his age and with his baggage was so utterly ridiculous, this situation is way more Reinsdorf’s fault than his.
