Sporcle Saturday: New year, new faces

Good morning, and Happy New Year!

With today marking the first Saturday –and Sporcle Saturday– of the calendar year, I thought it appropriate to start things off with a theme that focuses on new players from past seasons. So, this week you’ll be tasked with naming those batters who have logged at least one win above replacement in the first season of their playing career. In total, that’s 37 names: how many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • To reiterate, this list only contains batters who began their career with the White Sox. If they started their career with a different team, they will not be found on this list.
  • I’ve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the season and bWAR compiled, and ordered the list from highest WAR to lowest.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • 13 of the players on this list finished in the top ten Rookie of the Year voting.
  • From those 13, three went on to win Rookie of the Year.
  • The youngest players on this list to make their debut were both 21, while the elder statesmen of the group led the way at the ripe old age of 30.

27/37. Only one I missed in my lifetime was the 2015 OF. At most, I could have gotten 30. Great quiz, Ted!! Happy new year to all!!

27/37, and I also missed the 2015 outfielder as my only 21st-century miss. This was fun, as I don’t have a handle on whether a lot of these guys started their careers with the Sox.

Happy new year from a household where fireworks and a terrified dog mean there’s more coffee than usual to start the day.

20/37 here. Should’ve hit a few more – I have a bug where I think of someone, don’t enter it, and then later mistakenly think I did. I thought for sure that the 2017 person had come up with another team with some level of infamy.

Very nice quiz to start 2022 btw, thanks!

20/37. 4 others that I definitely should have remembered.

Trooper Galactus

Yikes, this one was rough. Minor quibble, but the 2008 SS was technically a 2B that season (117 GS), and started three times more games in CF (6) than at SS (2). I thought maybe it just listed him at the position he spent most of his White Sox career as, but then that would be inconsistent with the 2009 3B.

Only 11 out of 37 correct. It’s a miracle how many of these replacement level rebuild OF guys just blend into the background. I’m mad I didn’t get the 2005 2B though.

Any list that includes Caruso and Delmonico is pretty obscure to say the least!
