White Sox Minor Keys: Sept. 1, 2021

Atrium Health Ballpark

In my review of Matthew Thompson and the other Kannapolis prospects I hadn’t seen in person before last week, I’d forgotten to give my first impressions of Atrium Health Ballpark, the new downtown home of the Cannon Ballers.

It shouldn’t surprise you to learn that it’s a gem, just like the three other ballparks the White Sox’s full-season affiliates call home. It’s right downtown, with shops along West Avenue on the other side of the park, and Main Street (with free parking at the train station lot) two blocks away. The only advantage the old Intimidators Stadium had was ample parking right on site, but that’s only because it wasn’t located close to anything else.

The dimensions also seemed to play pretty fair, although there were so many strikeouts that it didn’t leave a robust sample of fly balls with which to judge. A couple of promising flies died deep in the alleys, but the no-doubters cleared the wall with plenty of room to spare.

I was reminded to offer my thoughts because Scott Merkin talked to Chris Getz about the ballpark, and to follow up on our discussion from Tuesday’s Minor Keys, he says the Sox have some housing close by:

โ€œYou fast forward to where we are today, not only to the beautiful stadium, but commerce has followed as well,โ€ Getz said. โ€œThey have shops and restaurants and bars. Thereโ€™s an apartment complex [where] players and staff stay within walking distance. You are really getting a full fan experience, but also the added benefits of having everything within walking distance.

โ€œIโ€™ve enjoyed going down there. I know our roving staff and our staff on a regular basis, along with the players, enjoyed it. Itโ€™s a walkable downtown. But I do see that itโ€™s bringing fans to the stadium, bringing people to the area. Itโ€™s only going to continue to grow. They have a vision of making this kind of an area in an untapped market, and they have done a really good job so far.โ€

You would hope they might be able to use Adolfo next spring, somehow. Or trade him. Would be a shame to lose him for nothing with the strides he has finally made this year.

fustercluck

would like to see them reward the unwavering faith of Jim Callis

As Cirensica

We do have a RF opening next year

joewho112

Teams with championship aspirations shouldn’t go into the season with Plan A being a prospect nowhere near the top 100 who has a 34+% K-rate

As Cirensica

But Eaton was OK?

joewho112

No. Was pointing to a ridiculous argument that I didn’t make in order to make your argument look better OK?

As Cirensica

OK
I think the team has a lot of talent and can afford one or two experiments

joewho112

I’d like to experiment with someone who won’t be walking back to the dugout with his bat on his shoulder 40% of the time. I didn’t enjoy it when Adam Dunn was on the team but at least he could hit 40 HR. Adolfo is Dunn with half the power and fewer walks.

mrridgman

I’m surprising myself by saying that I’d rather they try Sheets/Adolfo/other prospect as Plan A in 2022 RF; realizing that the other likely scenario is WS signing grade C FA who under his ceiling will be average.

Adam Engel?

xubrent

Can someone kindly update on what’s up with Engel at this moment? I know the injury and I thought a rehab assignment was on the horizon but I can’t figure out where he stands. Is it bad still?!?

As Cirensica

I think I read Jim saying he started a rehab last week or something like that but no timetable has been mentioned.

Looks like Friday

I actually wonder if any of the thinking with Romy is concern that Engel won’t be healthy for the post-season

LamarHoyt_oncrack

I love Engel but you have to wonder how many games they can count on him for.

Hope we see him in October (and before that) first of all. I feel like they need to have a pretty damn good alternative for next year in case Engel is one of those injury prone guys.

If Jose Rodriguez finishes the season strong (there are about two more weeks of games for Winston-Salem), it will be interesting to see where they assign him next year. If he’s assigned to Birmingham, it seems possible that he’d make his major league debut later that season at age 21.

Brett R. Bobysud

Going from Winston-Salem to Birmingham is the biggest jump in competition in the minors (other than going from AAA to the majors itself).

I’d pump the breaks on Rodriguez just a bit.

jorgefabregas

Assuming he stays healthy, they should have data on him from instructs or fall league, and spring training, so they should have a pretty good idea about whether he should be able to handle it.

jorgefabregas

A BP scout put a 60 on their report of Matthew Thompson after seeing him 3 times this year. I’m not going to do a big pull quote, but you (the general you) should check it out if you can. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/69423/eyewitness-accounts-josh-jung-yoelqui-cespedes-ezequiel-tovar-kyle-nicolas-matthew-thompson/

There’s also a report on Cespedes that I consider to be positive

ForsterFTOG

Collins homered, drove in two and struck out.
