As they scored on the Collins single, it looked like Leury García is a much faster runner than Yasmani Grandal. Who knew?

Smart defense from Leury there

LaRussa is definitely slow-playing the return of Engel. I would have thought him a lock for the lineup today against a side-arm lefty. Instead we have Lamb in right and Goodwin in center. (Mind you it has worked, so I guess I can’t really complain). But somewhat mystifying to me.

Been wondering why MLB uses a chicken for their logo?
Bringing in Evan Marshall for the highest leverage out of the game is a joke

With all the other holes in their lineup today, it is still hard to convince me that Grandal is all that good, or is having a good season, even if the ball is coming off his bat with a high velocity or whatever. His walk rate likely in part because it makes sense for opposing pitchers to walk anybody hitting in front of Eaton, Lamb, etc. His OPS when he hits higher than 6th plummets to below .500 with better hitters behind him. An average below .150 means he is less than 1/2 as likely to get a hit compared to a .300 hitter. That’s not a meaningless metric. His WAR with the Sox is lower than it has been since 2014. He is not the worst of their problems but also not they guy they hoped they were getting when they signed him, that’s for sure.
Don’t look at the top 20 list of position players in WARP (better all-encompassing stat for catcher value). It may make you a bit angry (Grandal is 18th in all of baseball).
I’m not angry but not buying that a player hitting .150 is one of the top 20 position players in baseball because he walks a lot, sorry. I would call that a little ridiculous. But I’ll take that he got a walk off hit today. Hope my post marked the low point of his season!
They’re not paying him to match his 2019 production. If they were, he would have gotten a $150 million dollar contract. He’s a catcher in his thirties. There’s going to be some decline. But so far this year he has as good of a wRC+ as he’s had since his rookie year. With the terrible batting averages across baseball, there are many, many players whose position in the lineup put them regularly in front of a pair of lousy hitters. And yet he’s just about the only hitter in the league with a walk rate like that. And it’s not as if his walks aren’t turning into runs–he’s tied for second most runs on the team despite only having the 9th most plate appearances.
Game winning hit today, perhaps payback for my post LOL! Although if it worked like that and my post was in some way responsible, Eaton would have the highest OPS in baseball. Good walk off win, hope my post marked the low point of his season.
I think you’re both right. Getting Kopech back is going to help a lot, but I still think it would be prudent for them to add at least one good RHP to the bullpen.
So I guess we can never expect to see Hendricks in a tie game at home, in any circumstance, unless it’s extra innings. Just daily incompetence out of TLR. Where is Engel, btw?
But yes, credit is due, especially for a guy who battled back from TJ to pitch this year, pretty cool moment for Burr and the 1st-in-MLB Sox!

I can’t help but think if we had had a healthy outfield the platoon in right field (Engel/Eaton) would have worked out fairly well. Alas, Eaton was forced to face left handers and play while he was dinged up. The key for me is Robert. Patience on OF help may yet be required.
Day game Giolito and a Moncadaless lineup…I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Hah, thanks a lot. Now I can never unsee this.

Can’t make that error Mendick

Right. He’s obviously the 18th most valuable position player in baseball.
You can’t ignore the stats you don’t like just because the one you do (batting average), isn’t good.
That game winning hit will raise his batting average.
Guess I deserve that.
Personal L’s for Team W’s ain’t a bad trade

Not watching the game but following on gameday has been painful enough. Hahn needs to trade for one high leverage reliever.
If this were a playoff game Kopech and not Heuer would have been brought in bridging us to Liam.

Apparently he is not ready to play two consecutive games when the 2nd game is during the day
Mendick making up for his error there with the lead-off double. Make it count.
Narrator: They did not make it count.
To be fair to Vaughn, I’m not sure many hitters can cover a plate that wide.
and then the Ump takes the bat out of Vaughn’s hands by calling two balls strikes
He sure did.
Ryan Burr, eh? Saving the closer for the next lead they get that automatically ends the game?
I didn’t like the decision, but credit where it’s due, good job by Burr there.
One gift of a strikeout and two roped outs. I hope TLR knows his get out of jail free card was just spent.
I thought his get out of jail free card was that he’s a hall of famer baseball person?
But yes, credit is due, especially for a guy who battled back from TJ to pitch this year, pretty cool moment for Burr and the 1st-in-MLB Sox!
