Sporcle Saturday: Your 1994 Chicago White Sox

Happy New Year! As we look forward to the spring and what will hopefully be a season more representative of standard-issue baseball, there are also high hopes that this year brings the first back-to-back playoff appearances in franchise history. 2006 is the last time I anticipated the White Sox returning to the playoffs (At least, I think. I don’t remember entering the 2009 season particularly enthused about the team’s chances?), but 1994 is likely the season in which the Sox were best-equipped to return to the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

Today’s Sporcle will test your knowledge of that 1994 squad. Who were the pitchers? Who were the starter fielders? Who were the bench guys? In all, 34 players suited up over the course of that ill-fated 1994 season: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the number of games a player appeared in, and their position.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

Let’s peruse some leaderboards, shall we?

  • Triple Crown leaders: Batting average (Tony Gwynn, .394); Home runs (Matt Williams, 43); RBI (Jeff Bagwell, 116).
  • On the pitching side: Wins (Jimmy Key, 17); Strikeouts (Randy Johnson, 204); ERA (Greg Maddux, 1.56); Saves (Lee Smith, 33).
  • A few of the batting categories White Sox position players led: OBP, OPS, runs scored, walks, triples, XBH.

May this inaugural quiz of 2021 have nothing to do with an avalanche of offensive production suddenly halted by a labor stoppage.

31/34. The guys I missed were

catchers, mostly
Howitt, Tingley, and the current Oakland manager. I have no memory of Dane Johnson, but thanks to the centerfielder I get credit for “knowing” him.

I do not generally keep players names from the past in my head, but I want to comment for those with similar wiring or desire and say I got 13. Who among you got less than that?

madridsox

No worries. I got 14…

Also 13/34. I distinctly remember buying a complete White Sox set of 1994 Topps baseball cards at a game as a kid. I can still picture many of those cards, but I’m ashamed to admit that at that age I wasn’t yet obsessively analyzing the back end of the team’s roster.

I have the complete 94 set too. I went through the trouble of putting them in a binder that I brought to work to show a co-worker who was a Cleveland fan. How I did not remember the LF or DH on that team is beyond me

Eight! I usually do a little better as only bigger names are needed for most of these (just over a longer period of time), but I have no excuses since 1994 was nearly the height of my baseball fandom in terms of how much attention I paid to the names, and I had most of these guys’ baseball cards. Most days I probably could’ve gotten Lance and Tim, but just brain farted the outfield for some reason (Barely remembering Baines… sigh.) Bere is the one I should’ve known of the pitchers, other than that I got the ones I can really remember (Alvarez/Hernandez/McDowell/Fernandez).

You’ll never guess which back up catcher I forgot.

23/34. There were 4 or 5 guys I should have gotten, but there were at least 5 that I don’t remember at all.
