SteveV’s rambling so-called plan (or an offseason plan)

PREAMBLE

I feel like I’m rushing this but I’m okay with it as a starting point. The 2020 Sox were a bright point in a dark year. Well, here we are: we need 1) To fix the starting staff; 2) add a DH; 3) add a RF; 4) add a LH bat. I guess a backup catcher too, though as you’ll see I didn’t do that. I concluded that Kopech is the best bargaining chip they have. I think I’m probably overvaluing someone who hasn’t really pitched at MLB level yet but so it goes.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE PLAYERS

Write “tender,” “non-tender” or “rework/extend” after each player and their projected 2020 salaries, arranged by the three calculation methods described by MLB Trade Rumors. Feel free to offer explanation afterward if necessary.

  • Nomar Mazara: $5.6M | $5.9M | $5.7M non-tender
  • Carlos Rodón: $4.5M | $4.5M | $4.5M tender; I keep believing there is something there. I’m the sucker here.
  • Lucas Giolito: $2.5M | $5.3M | $2.5M tender
  • Reynaldo López: $1.7M | $2.2M | $1.7M tender; I don’t care if you want to rework for league minium.
  • Evan Marshall: $1.3M | $1.9M | $1.4M tender
  • Adam Engel: $1M | $1.4M | $1M tender
  • Jace Fry: $800K | $1M | $800K tender
  • Yolmer Sánchez: Uncertain

CLUB OPTIONS

Write “pick up” or “decline” or “rework” after the option.

  • Edwin Encarnación: $12M Let go
  • Gio González: $7M ($500K buyout) Let go
  • Leury García: $3.5M ($250K buyout)  Sign. I have confidence in Leury in his role. I think you can do a lot more harm getting that role wrong than people think. Let’s keep a known and not chance signing a Bonifacio.

OTHER IMPENDING FREE AGENTS

Try to retain, or let go?

  • Alex Colomé (Made $10,532,500 in 2020) Sign 2 Yr $14 MM per. Teams with aspirations here need backend relievers.
  • James McCann (Made $5.4M in 2020) Let go
  • Jarrod Dyson (Made $2M in 2020) Let go

COACHING STAFF

Here’s a first: Pick your manager and pitching coach, with any elaboration.

  • Manager: Bochy
  • Pitching coach: Zeleski

FREE AGENTS

List three free-agent targets you’d pursue during the offseason, with a reasonable contract.I think the $ for the first year is reasonable. I have no idea if the lengths of contracts are. I’ll convince Jerry that a mistake on Escobar ony costs $10 MM for a couple years and we’re a big-city team.

No. 1: Jake Odorizzi  $17 MM 3 years

No. 2: Taijuan Walker $6MM  3 years

TRADES

Propose trades that you think sound reasonable for both sides, and the rationale behind them. A good example of a bad idea:

No. 1: Trade Michael Kopech and Dylan Cease to Texas for Joey Gallo.

We get our LH RF for two years.’

No. 2: Trade Dane Dunning, Micker Adolfo, and Reynoldo Lopez for 1 year of Eduardo Escobar.

SUMMARY

I work the salary out to $141 MM with $34.3 MM in in retained players and $33 MM in FA. If that’s too expensive, add Rodon in deal for Gallo and get a prospect. I’m missing a player so add #26 at your convenience

I’m going to give this a hard “no”. You’ve decimated the young and apparently threw Eloy into the net, from which he apparently remains. I award you zero points and may God have mercy on your soul.
