Sporcle Saturday: Opening Day pitchers and catchers since 1970

Today marks the first Spring Training game for the White Sox. While these games are, on the whole, meaningless exhibitions, they play an important mileage marker in my head: spring, and warmer weather, are on the way.

As is tradition around these parts, today will also mark the first of a six-part Sporcle series asking you to name the various players who manned each position on Opening Day. This will take us into the first Saturday of the season, at which time you’ll be tasked with filling in all the Opening Day positions all at once, including the lineup the Sox roll out in 2020. This year we’re going all the way back to 1970. For today, there are 100 entries for Opening Day batteries: how many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • Pitchers and catchers are grouped by year, together.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • This year will be the sixth straight season the Sox go with a different pitcher on Opening Day. That’s the longest such streak since the mid-70s and early-80s, when they went eight consecutive seasons. (1976-1983)
  • In franchise history, the Sox have never had a starting pitcher start Opening Day for more than 5 consecutive seasons. (Darn 2007)
  • For catcher, the longest such streak is 15 consecutive seasons, belonging to Ray Schalk.

Me and boomer both got 97/100. He missed two catchers one that registered twice I missed three solo catchers from the 70s. Both got all the pitchers.ย

93/100. I missed one pitcher, 1988. And then I missed a handful of catchers: 1976, 1979, 1980, 1986, 1998, and 1999

roke1960

Got all 100. Finally got the ’76 catcher with 35 seconds left.

I bow down to you. I guessed probably half that team and could not remember him.

99/100. I will never, ever, ever remember the catcher from 1976.

roke1960

I went thru at least 10 different guys before I finally remembered him.

Luery an option year added, and Bummer a 5 year deal with 2 options added.

Now onto Moncada….
