White Sox Roster Moves: Dalquist signs, Anderson to IL, Detwiler and Palka added to 25-man

A pretty big news dump for the Chicago White Sox this Friday afternoon. Starting with the most pressing is, officially, Tim Anderson is on the 10-day Injured List with a sprained ankle. With it being retroactive to June 26th, if Anderson’s ankle feels better in a week, there is a chance he could be back for the Cubs series. If not, then Anderson will get a few more days of rest during the All-Star Break. The White Sox have a pretty arduous road trip after the break visiting Oakland, Kansas City, and then Tampa for ten games.

The second news item first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com yesterday is Yonder Alonso being designated for assignment is official. No word yet if his charity bowling tournament scheduled this weekend with White Sox charities is still happening.

With Anderson on the mend and Alonso off the team, Rick Hahn purchased the contract of starting pitcher Ross Detwiler and recalled outfielder Daniel Palka. In eight starts with the Charlotte Knights, Detwiler 3.98 ERA and a high LOB% of 91.4%. His FIP was 6.21, and his HR/9 was 2.3, so hopefully, those numbers stay behind in Charlotte. MLB.com’s White Sox beat reporter, Scott Merkin, is reporting that Detwiler will start tonight against the league leader in home runs, the Minnesota Twins.

Palka didn’t have the extreme home and away splits like his Knights counterparts, but still struggled against left-handed pitching.

In 2019 MLB Draft news, third-round pick Andrew Dalquist has officially signed with the White Sox according to our good friend, Jim Callis. The amount is $2 million, which is well over the slot value of $755,300, and it buys him out of his college commitment with Arizona.

Finally, with MLB All-Star starters announced yesterday, the Futures Game rosters were released. Luis Robert and Nick Madrigal will be representing the White Sox which looks like a no-brainer when seeing how well they are performing in Birmingham.

Looks like I’ll be starting Kepler and Schoop tonight on my fantasy baseball team.

Ted Mulvey

That would seem like a good idea, yes.

roke1960

Any injury news on Moncada?

Tavarin

Just that he’s day to day. The news for the rest of the organization is a bit rougher with Lambert, Burdi and Burr out for the season.

ndsoxfan

Nick Burdi is out for the season I don’t believe Zack is

Burdi’s out for the season with a knee injury. Burr and Lambert get added to the UCL repair list.

ParisSox

I had no idea Hamilton had his face fractured a few weeks ago.  That’s awful.

karkovice squad

By a foul ball. Time to net the dugouts and camera wells, too. Also, make everyone wear helmets.

Was hoping the Sox were done with the Palka experiment. Didn’t want any AB’s taken from Collins this year.
Glad to hear about Dalquist. Higher on him than Thompson.

PopeDonnPall

Yeah cutting one immobile sluggo just to bring in another when you already have Collins is just uninspiring.

The injuries are just brutal. Who do the Sox have to trade from beyond Robert, Madrigal, Cease who they want to keep? Just don’t think the rest move the needle much with other teams when you consider performance and injury.

asinwreck

Well, no one died.

*mutes James Fegan on Twitter just in case*

asinwreck

Yes, all that and Jake Burger!

Jake Burger is still dealing with his bruised heel. Target is now to get him at the tail end of the AZL season or into instructional league

ImmortalTimeTravelMan

Good God, so much for that bullpen of the future….

PopeDonnPall

Good god the injury announcements…

The big positive is nothing torn for Tim. Very big positive.

The rest of it – yikes.

How will these injuries factor into decisions on who to protect from the Rule 5 this off season?

And how many of these guys will even be ready to go at the start of next year?

metasox

Will be interesting to see how the Sox manage the 40 man with guys who won’t be available at the beginning of next season.

zerobs

When does it get re-named as “White Sox Surgery?” MLB Trade Rumors is saying 4-6 weeks for Anderson. Is the #7 pick protected if they sign a player with a QO in the upcoming off-season? Is there such a thing as an “on” season with this organIzation?

Greg Nix

The Sox need to re-evaluate their medical and training staff top to bottom. I’m sure they’ve been unlucky, but all the guys getting re-injured during rehab should raise huge red flags.

tommytwonines

Yes, re-injuries – Rodon, Burdi, Adolfo – WTF? I know Rodon is not actually a re-injury, but so disappointing. I remember him boldly saying at Soxfest that his expectations for himself were far higher than those of the fans. Well you were right – we just wanted to see you upright on an mlb mound for a full season.

metasox

Looks like Giolito will an extra day of rest his next two turns which might do him some good.

Yolmer

I’m not too worried about him. His last two starts weren’t great, but the Red Sox and Cubs are two of the best offensive teams in the league.

metasox

This season is likely to be his heaviest innings load. I think it is ok to be a little careful

karkovice squad

His command’s slipped away earlier in games the last 3 starts after they ran up his workload Houston through KC. That seems like pretty good evidence he’s fatigued.

karkovice squad

@metasox maybe but extra days of rest between don’t have a strong correlation to any kind of improvement. They need to change their usage of him, his maintenance program, or both.

MrTopaz

I got out of work early, and had a late lunch when I got off the train. I had been checking my phone before I started eating, and didn’t see any news. Didn’t check it again until after the long walk home, during which time apparently everyone had surgery. Skull fractures after a line drive to the face? A busted patella? Something like 15 TJ surgeries? What the hell, guys?
