White Sox Minor Keys: June 18, 2019
The White Sox can finally say that one of their prep picks made it to the majors.
Sure, he was selected 10 years ago, and he finally broke through with his third organization, but Rangel Ravelo is finally a big leaguer. The 27-year-old had his contract purchased by the Cardinals after hitting .333/.414/.543 for Triple-A Memphis.
The White Sox selected Ravelo out of Hialeah High School in Florida in the sixth round, or 16 rounds before they selected Ravelo’s high school teammate Ozney Guillen, Ozzie Guillen’s youngest son. It was one of many stupid flash points during the cold war. Here, the Guillen family felt betrayed by Kenny Williams, partially because they didn’t think Ravelo was the better prospect, especially 16 rounds better.
Ten years later, Ravelo is a big leaguer, meaning all four players traded by the White Sox to the A’s in the Jeff Samardzija trade are now in the majors. On the other side, Ozney Guillen wasn’t drafted a second time. That said, Guillen is managing my local nine on the Justin Jirschele track, so he’s doing fine for himself.

4 out of the 7 17-year-olds have above league average batting lines, plus another is almost average at 99 wRC+. It’s good and cool. https://www.fangraphs.com/minorleaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=1&season=2019&team=223&players=0&sort=1,a
Wow, I did not know about Jacob Lindgren. Back to back Tommy John surgeries, that is really rough.
