Danny Farquhar is cleared for a comeback

Everybody has something to be thankful for today, but specific to the subject of this blog, Danny Farquhar has everybody beat.

James Fegan caught up with Danny Farquhar seven months after Farquhar collapsed in the dugout at Guaranteed Rate Field. While Farquhar has had to make some minor tweaks to his life — he wears a helmet on the golf course and at the gym, and apparently it’s getting pretty ripe — it’s all systems go otherwise, and he was medically cleared to play baseball this week.

While the medical clearance to step on a mound and face live hitters was a final step, the “if” of Farquhar’s comeback turned into a question of “when” a long time ago. He was pleased to find that his condition didn’t scare off the baseball world, and said that multiple teams have expressed interest in him for next season since he became a free agent after being outrighted off the White Sox’s 40-man roster. He has in no way closed the door on a return to the Sox, but he certainly won’t need a favor from them to have a shot at pitching again in the majors either.

“The door is not closed with the White Sox, they’re just in the mix with all the other teams and we’ll see how it plays out,” Farquhar said. “I was pretty happy that it was not, ‘This guy has an injury, let’s stay away from him.’ I’m happy to see that teams just want to see my medicals, my medical records and hear from the doctors and make sure that I’m cleared before they make any offers. I’m very happy to hear that I’m not ostracized out of the game.”
