Arizona Fall League recap: Oct. 9, 2018

Zack Burdi betrayed by poor defense in Arizona Fall League opener, but Laz Rivera came up big

Zack Burdi is going to be under the microscope a little bit over the course of the Arizona Fall League, and his season didn’t get off to the smoothest of starts, as he gave up three runs over the course of two outs on Tuesday afternoon.

In his defense, he had no defense. All three runs were unearned, and two of the runs scored after he departed. The innings started with a throwing error by shortstop Thairo Estrada, and after a single up the middle, the Desert Dogs once again botched a 6-3, with the error charged to Steven Sensley.

Burdi ended up recording four outs — a backwards K and a popout to his final two batters — before departing. He threw 21 pitches, 12 for strikes. I haven’t seen any radar gun readings.

Laz Rivera’s mom tweeted in response to his highlight. Wholesome. At least I assume it’s, because who would pretend to be Laz Rivera’s mom?

He doesn’t look like much of a runner to my eyes on that play, but I wouldn’t put much stock into my observations on such things.
