Jose Abreu is going to head on the disabled list after undergoing an outpatient procedure on his lower abdomen. That could open up a spot for Eloy Jimenez, but it seems like Jose Rondon is the lucky winner for the time being, as he didn’t appear in Knights’ doubleheader against Norfolk.
It won’t be anybody who played, as the nightcap didn’t end until 1:58 a.m. local time.

Has Collins progressed enough defensively this year to warrant starting 2019 at Charlotte?
If Omar Narvaez is any indication, Collins’ defense won’t be something that holds him back.
Man Narvaez looks like shit back there
The numbers match the eye test.
His SB% allowed is bad again after a promising end to 2017, although that’s pretty pitcher-dependent. He’s still allowing passed balls at a pretty awful rate. It does sound like the Sox still plan on riding him as a catcher for a while. I do like that he and Seby are getting more chances to catch now that they’re split up; I wouldn’t hate seeing him start at AA next season for a month or so to keep getting defensive reps.
Has his offense?
He had 1 lucky BABIP fueled month of success.
He is 4th in the southern league in wRC+. We can debate a lot about Collins prospectdom, but yes he offensively ready to be challenged at AAA
He had 5 home runs that month and walked more than he struck out. Not sure “lucky” is a word I’d use.
Let’s also keep in mind that he plays most his games in a HORRIBLE park for hitters. I’d be more than happy to let him play everyday in Charlotte next year. If they don’t want him and Seby to split time at DH, they can send Seby back to BHam for all I care. It’s not like he was more “deserving” of a promotion.
Seby is more likely to be in Chicago next year than Birmingham.
That’s fine with me. I don’t really care where he is, as long as he’s not slowing down Collins.
Seby might very well start next year on the 40-man as the 3rd catcher, depending on what happens with Castillo & Smith.
Ryan Cordell is hitting .309/.347/.471 in August after missing most of the season to injury. I would have liked to see him get called up instead of Lamarre. He’s already 26 and on the 40 man. I would guess he will get called up in a week and a half when the roster expands, but he’s intriguing for me.
It’s sad how much injuries have derailed his career, and he still looks like he has five tool potential in center field.
Giving Tilson and Cordell their shot is why I am nowhere near jumping on the “sign A.J. Pollock” train.
But Cordell’s best case is probably a poor man’s Pollock (and Tilson’s is a homeless-man’s Pollock). If the Sox think Pollock can be the starting CF on their next contender, I’m all for signing him.
Pollock’s awesome, but he’s just never healthy. I wouldn’t count on that narrative changing in his 30s.
Cordell and Tilson say hello from the infirmary.
Well, nobody’s paying them $15 million a year to be there.
I don’t mean an audition for starter on a contending team.I mean as potential 4th OF on contender or trade piece to acquire talent for a contender.
Pollock’s health combined with possible positive outcomes from either of the Luises or Walker precludes me from wanting Pollock signed past 2020.
IMO- Not $ well spent.
Auditions from 4th OFs who themselves can’t stay healthy are pretty low on my priority list. I don’t see a contender giving up anything of value for either of those guys.
Also, I think there’s about a 10% chance of Walker sticking in CF long-term (although he could become a pretty great 4th OF in his own right).
Yes. Having patience during a rebuild is tough.
Our own FO proved it by badly jumping the gun only 3 short years ago.
Cordell seems stretched in CF and, given his complete lack of power, Tilson needs to be WAY better than he showed defensively to justify anything resembling a starting role. I don’t think I’d let either of them stand in the way of a real solution from outside.
Agreed. Pollock on a 3 year deal makes a ton of sense. Next year is a no brainer. Barring something spectacular happening, none of our potentials long term CF’s will be ready for a promotion to the bigs.
Realistically, if everything goes well, we’re looking at mid-to-late 2020 for potential callups of Basabe/Robert, maybe even 2021 for Robert. So that’s at least half of Pollock’s contract gone, maybe even 2/3rds. Even if someone is ready sooner than expected, I don’t think they’d have a hard time moving on from Avi, opening up another OF spot. Then, in the final year, if everything goes well with development and we have multiple guys ready, we can rotate outfielders as needed. It’s not that hard to get 4 OF’ers consistent playing time, especially in the AL.
If we don’t sign someone like Pollock next year, where going to be stuck with another year of 4th/5th outfielders in the starting lineup. Even if Pollock gets injured, our lineup won’t be any different than it is this year. Then Cordell/Tilson can get their chances. Completely worth the risk IMO.
The only question mark is whether we could get AJ to sign a 3 year deal or not. If we overpaid in dollars to get the years down, I’d have a hard time believing he wouldn’t be willing to sign for 3 years. Give him something like 3/$90M. Our payroll is incredibly low right now, and there’s really nowhere we’ll be spending big money on in the near future, unless they legitimately plan on going after a Machado/Arenado. Outside of that, the only player I can think of that would need an extension during that span is Rodon. Every other spot should be filled with young, cheap players.
Luis Robert is the better choice, stop thinking you need to stop at every level. His defence is major league ready. The outfield is loaded with talent down to low A level. Third base is something that needs to be looked at. Does anyone know what the hitting philosophy is?
Luis Robert? In an organization that won’t promote Eloy before he plays in 100 games or whatever, Robert is going to jump on up to the MLB level that quick? A guy who hasn’t hit a single HR at any level this year, but is still striking out nearly 30% of the time? A guy who has played basically a half a season in the past 3 years? I think he’s gonna need a few years in the minors.
Robert’s having trouble barreling up pitchers in High-A. He has a lot of catching up to do before we can even consider him for a starting gig.
Right now Robert is probably better than Engel.
Is that the bar?
Seeing a major leaguer play CF for the first time in 3 years is why everyone else is
Interesting development.
Per James Fegan, Ryan Burr is in Chicago.
Luis Avilan has been traded to the Phillies for RHP Felix Paulino. That would explain Burr’s promotion.
Paulino is a 23-year old RHP who was currently starting for the Phillies AA affiliate in Reading. He spent the first half of the season at High-A Clearwater. He started the year as a relief pitcher and only converted to starting in July.
Not great results yet – but worth a shot. We are pretty stocked up on left handed relievers
He was a starter until some time last year. He was moved back to the rotation when he went to AA. Scouting the stat line, he doesn’t look like anything special. Maybe that’s why you don’t scout stat lines.
Short guy who it sounds like can get it up to 95 mph in relief, sits low 90s when he starts, 4 pitches but none of the off-speed stuff sounds impressive. Could be an interesting relief project, especially if they can get him to just focus on cleaning up just 2 or 3 pitches.
Avilan had one year of arbitration left. Doesn’t fit. Didn’t need him.
Not when we have Aaron Bummer waiting for another crack at the Bigs!
